- My assigned unit was the Children’s Intensive Care Unit (CICU), a 16-bedded area. In CICU, both the medical and nursing team does critical care management of pediatric medical patients; and pre-operative and post-operative care of pediatric surgical patients including cardiac surgical patients. CICU also has a multidisciplinary team for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. KKH CICU also offers Children’s Hospital Emergency Transport Services (CHETS) led by trained and skilled senior staff nurses and nurse clinicians. For long-term patients, homecare services are also rendered. Staff also undergo regular resuscitation training and are knowledgeable in the care of central and peripherally inserted catheters. The usual nurse-patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:2, depending on the severity of the cases. CICU serves over 700 patients a year who have on-site medical attention around the clock.
