Install, calibrate electronic systems, components, and subassemblies: Operates and maintains avionics equipment by analyzing operating characteristics, integrated test systems built-in-test (BIT) to isolate malfunctions in integrated avionics systems to include multiplexed data buss systems, recording systems, flight instruments, computers, gyroscopic (gyro) compass systems, inertial navigation systems (INS), primary and secondary flight controls, automatic flight control, engine instrumentation, fuel management systems, central air data systems, communication and navigation systems, aircraft indicating systems, ground proximity warning systems (GPWS). Interprets specifications, schematics, and drawings of systems to accurately and effectively troubleshoot and repair. Determines effective steps and actions in the troubleshooting process to consistently complete tasks. Uses algebraic and trigonometric formulas for determining fuel quantity and various other system functionality and calibration. Provides technical guidance, training, and assistance to lower grade Airmen during modify, overhaul, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, align and the troubleshooting process.

Performs pretest, operational, functional, and final testing of electronic systems, components, or subassemblies: Performs and supervises alignment, calibration, and bore-sight of avionics systems. Performs off-equipment maintenance on selected avionics LRUs and maintains peculiar support equipment. Sets up and operates computerized test equipment to test and troubleshoot integrated systems. After repair, modification, or calibration, performs final functional and operational tests of systems. Removes, installs, checks, and repairs avionics systems, subsystems, and line replaceable units (LRU).

Interprets and recommends corrective action to inspection findings.

Uses and maintains tools and test equipment required to accomplish duties: Selects and uses proper tools and equipment required to accomplish daily duties. Maintains tools, equipment, work area, and accounts for all tools and equipment.

Ensures that airmen are utilizing the correct tools and technical data when performing flight line and in shop maintenance. Ensures equipment is operated in a safe manner, adhering to established safety rules and regulations to minimize minor and major violations. Trains new and transferred avionics technicians to become proficient in maintaining C-17 systems through the proper use of tools and test equipment.

Prepares effective training plans to maximize reserve training: Plans, organizes, and directs aircraft maintenance activities, effective training schedules, and their priority on a shop level. Using technical data, examines work performed by personnel with less experience and provides accurate feedback to ensure successful training. Assists in preparation of training plans to maximize Reserve training on Uniformed Training Assemblies. Assists in training presentations and key Quality Assurance briefings at the flight and shop level, helping to ensure a thorough dissemination of information to all personnel.

Certifies work produced under the USAF Technical Order program: Inspects and evaluates aircraft maintenance activities during flight line maintenance, Home Station Checks (HSC), Minor and Major Isochronal Inspections (ISO). Inspects and verifies operational status and configuration of avionics systems and software or cables. Modifies avionics systems according to time compliance technical order (TCTO) publications. Updates operational logs, inspection records, aircraft forms, and automated maintenance systems by use of a GO-81 (CAMS) terminal. Diagnoses malfunctions by applying technical orders, schematics, wiring diagrams, integrated test systems and other test equipment before removing, replacing, and repairing faulty system wiring, electrical connectors, antennas, transmission lines, and multi-conduct.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Works with all shop technicians to direct work assignments in order to keep a high proficiency for optimum ability for deployment. Establishes priorities for reservists’ appointments and training needs. Helps assist supervisory members to create a group that can be mobilized for a smooth transition from a daily home station operation to any deployment location. Assists airmen transitioning into and out of Seasoning Training as well as technicians without recent hands-on experience. Volunteers to deploy when deployment schedules are announced.
