To Whom It May Concern,

It is my pleasure to recommend Matthew Martin for this position. I have worked with Matthew for close to 10 years as my immediate supervisor within Pierce County Juvenile Court. Throughout these years, he has shown to be a valuable part of leadership as the various situations that arise one must be able to communicate effectively to get the job done and ensure everyone is safe throughout the day. Matthew countless times has been a huge part in ensuring staff learn the procedures of the facility and is often reaching out to ensure he is communicating these aspects clearly. Throughout the years of working under Matthew, he has been an exceptional leader within the facility that others as well as I could rely on. He always made sure to check in with his staff and to ensure his availability whenever he was needed for training, any questions as well as being someone to go to in order to better ourselves professionally. He was also chosen to be a part of a team within detention, due to being an effective leader, to work together to ensure detention could work effectively as a team but to also have a transparency between all levels of leadership down to the line staff. Matthew has an approachable and calm manner in which he has become a well trusted part of leadership that staff can use him to better themselves. Due to Matthew's gained trust, he also has shown countless times to be dependable in stressful times to communicate what is needed in order to get tasks done effectively and efficiently. Matthew is the person who will help his team no matter what. I have gone to him for advice throughout the years as I have grown further into adulthood. Within detention, the environment often becomes negative and stressful, Matthew was always showing up for staff and making sure that people were doing ok. He often knew us better than ourselves and did an excellent job of allowing staff to talk or take a moment when things got too intense. Matthew was a huge advocate of allowing his staff to express themselves and to emphasize to take care of ourselves outside of work and to also check in with our fellow coworkers. Matthew brought a human element to an environment that has a high rate of burnout as well as a place that tries to rid that aspect of being vulnerable in these intense moments. I have all the confidence that Matthew will excel in any position offered to him and will bring the same dedication and effort in which he has shown all these years at Pierce County Juvenile Court.

Sincerely, Marcie Brown

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to you today in support of applicant Matthew Martin for your open position. I have worked in the Juvenile Justice System with at-risk youth for 8 years now and have had the opportunity to teach, coach, and mentor youth to reach their full potential. I worked closely with Matthew Martin for that entire 8 years. Four years as a line staff and four years as his Lead Juvenile Detention Officer. He taught me everything I needed to know to be the best I can be in this career field. There are plenty of accomplishments Matthew has achieved professionally, too many to list, especially serving 30 years with the Juvenile Court.

I had the pleasure of being Matthew's Lead Juvenile Detention Officer for four years. I know him better than most of my colleagues. As a direct supervisor of mine, and many others, I know Matthew is always making himself available to anybody that needs help. Including other supervisors. He has worn many hats and balanced them all effectively. He backs his staff up when they are in the right and will coach them if they are in the wrong. He trains his staff with a hands on approach and guidance all while keeping safety and security in mind. He always makes himself available no matter how busy to try and hear any questions, comments, or concerns others may have. He offers professional advice, gives suggestions all while not overstepping staff and if overstepping staff is permitted to handle the situation fairly, he can effectively explain the reasoning. He makes himself approachable, personable, and offers a safe and nurturing environment. Matthew is the epitome of what it means to be a leader of people.

Not only is he a great leader of people and an advocate for staff, but he also advocates for youth as well. He has experience working with youths of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, cultures, and other various demographic populations. He is fair and yet firm in teaching responsibility and accountability. His guidance has helped many of our youth and their families navigate healthier ways to handle critical situations and offer them the resources they can use within the system and community. I have seen Matthew constantly being empathetic towards other's needs. He understands the importance of building a strong rapport with youth while maintaining healthy boundaries with them. He can do this because he is firm, fair, and consistent. His staff respect him and the youth especially respect him. He is one of the people that everyone enjoys working with and knows they can count on.

In conclusion, I view Matthew as a person who shows the ability to lead by example. This involves being able to hold himself accountable and being able to grow as a professional as well as foster a work environment for others to learn and improve. He shows the ability to be humble yet strong which are rare traits to have. One of the main things I have noticed when working with him is he is open to suggestions and always striving to boost morale. He is a great leader to have mentor you both professionally and personally. I have never felt overwhelmed or lost having him to go to with needing any help as a detention staff under his supervision. His knowledge and feel for things are unmatched. He is amazing at handling every situation with both the youth in custody and the subordinates he is training. I strongly recommend him for your open position.

Sincerely,

Zachary Vickers
