Performs complex supervisory work in the care and custody of inmates. Work involves scheduling, training, and supervising staff; and maintaining order and discipline among inmates. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS A. Functions as shift supervisor; supervises, instructs, trains, and ensures the safety of assigned employees and inmates; schedules employees and inmates work and off-duty time; and assists in formulating security and work procedures. B. Supervises and directs searches for contraband and provides security; counts, feeds, and supervises inmates in housing, work, and other areas accessed by stairs, steps, and ladders; and performs security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting and standing, and climbing stairs, steps, and ladders to reach the assigned areas. C. Supervises and provides custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates, squatting, and bending to perform “pat” and “strip” searches of inmates, restraining and securing sometimes assaultive inmates, and transferring and transporting inmates by walking or riding in various vehicles such as trailers, vans, buses, and other forms of transportation. D. Supervises and provides security of inmates performing technical skills such as construction, maintenance, laundry, food service, and in varied industrial and agricultural operations which involve climbing stairs, steps, and ladders and climbing around the inside and outside of buildings; works outdoors and indoors without air conditioning; works around motorized or moving equipment and machinery; and is subject to all types of weather. E. Responds to emergencies including climbing stairs, steps, and ladders while searching for escaped inmates, hearing calls for and calling for help, giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an injured or unconscious inmate or employee various distances to safety up or down stairs, steps, and ladders; and uses force and deadly force to include the use of chemical agents or firearms to control inmates. Reads, reviews, and properly applies information found in inmate records which is related to the inmate’s health and safety and to the security of the facility; provides appropriate information to other personnel; complies with all policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; enforces inmate disciplinary rules; and supervises the preparation and maintenance of records, forms, and reports.

Attends meetings relating to inmates care and treatment; gives and receives information, participates in problem solving and decision making; assures that subordinate staff are made aware of information. Provides paraprofessional counseling or crisis intervention to inmates and staff to defuse a situation or assist in rehabilitative programs; writes reports and notifies treatment staff and officials. Have performed a variety of administrative duties requiring technical skills in a specific field of expertise. Attended unit staff meetings as chairperson; direct discussions, explain, listen, guide problem solving processes, resolve conflicts; participate in decision-making. Performed related work as required.

Shift work: Exposure to hazards associated with duties maintaining Security and discipline of inmates in or outside an Institution. Perform duties delegated responsibility and authority providing Security, order, and discipline of Inmates in a variety of assignments within or outside an adult institution. Control Inmates who become unruly or lose self-control, applies appropriate disciplinary measures, and prepares reports of incidents. Inspect cells and other living quarters of Inmates for cleanliness and sanitation, search for contraband and confiscate when found. Count Inmates entering and leaving specified areas as a Security and control check. Use portable or stationary two way radios to communicate with Officers and Staff, or other institutions, uses communication codes. Write incident and other required reports in the prescribed format and in a timely manner. Maintain proficiency with weapons and other related defense and control equipment. Perform strip searches and pat searches of Inmates when searching for drugs or other contraband items. Transport Inmates to various sites inside and outside an institution; provide security, order, and discipline. Check Security of facilities, alert for fire or other dangers or for Inmates who may have encountered an emergency health problem, alert proper response team, assist in controlling.
