From July 2020 to July 2021, I worked as a medical assistant in a clinical dermatology setting. My responsibilities included rooming patients, assisting with exams and procedures, documenting visits in EMA, sending prescriptions and lab orders, confirming iPledge compliance, and initiating prior authorizations for medications. During this time, I also began training directly with the practice owner to assist in Mohs surgery.
In August 2021, I was promoted to lead medical assistant for one of the eight Mohs surgeons in our practice, a role I have held since. This position is highly fast-paced, involving preoperative and postoperative care for approximately 14 Mohs surgeries per day. My duties include surgical setup, patient intake and vitals, obtaining preoperative histories, administering local anesthesia, assisting in surgery, cauterization, occasionally performing epidermal suturing, wound bandaging, and providing thorough postoperative wound care instructions.
In addition to Mohs cases, I manage follow-up appointments—removing sutures or staples and performing wound care for grafts, flaps, and second-intention healing sites. I also assist with scheduled excisions in the afternoons, including the removal of skin cancers, lipomas, cysts, keloids, and performing earlobe repairs.
At the end of each day, I ensure all clinical notes are complete, manage inventory, send orders, clean and restock rooms, and follow up with patients as needed. I have also trained five new team members, helping them transition smoothly into their roles.
