  • When I started working at Martin Harris Construction, I started working in the special projects division
  • In this division anywhere from 1 million to 10 million consisted of Office buildings, Renovations, Fueling stations, Hospitality, Parking garages, as a senior I was head of the projects I had teams of juniors, estimators l & ll, we would set a meeting for review of documents strategize and prepare to divide up divisional work between all of us
  • I would do a complete takeoff after review of drawings and specifications I would gather all questions and review all RFI's and prepare for architect and engineers review we would build scopes complete for subcontractor selection and then it was a constant battle on a daily basis of talking to our subcontractors at making sure that we are on track with making sure to have basic bids having at least three to 5 bids in our bank on bid day
  • In the meantime, we would strategize meetings with our staff also we would work with project management and our superintendents and operations to get their input and get on a bid pricing levels as we work through our takeoffs and our pricing levels
  • On bid day we gather in the war room and work hand in hand with scope review coming in from the contractors making sure we had no scope gaps and our pricing levels one of the best that we could get
  • As senior I maintain the main computer and input it all the data that was incoming from all of the othersourcing people bringing in data putting into the boxes, 30 minutes before bid time I had inputted all data we made a mad dash to get the best numbers calling all of our subcontractors getting best numbers we could making and negotiating the best deals we could in that last 15 minutes corporate reviewed numbers have relied on our best decision importing in the final number
  • I was asked to move into the industrial division which state warehousing and This is where I learn a lot of my preconstruction, we had our own property division, and I was able to learn from the lower level and how the operations started with the preconstruction of property management
  • MHC Self performed their own concrete so they were a powerhouse in the market for tilt wall We were one of the superior companies in the marketplace doing warehouse work I was bidding work on warehousing 250,000 square foot facilities upwards of a million square feet some of my success were Amazon warehousing of 850,000 square feet and a million square feet other success that I had with Martin Harris was when I worked in the multifamily division I successfully bid the Tahiti village project which I was very proud of and went on to win the Tahiti Village ll part.

  • I've prepared my RFIs for their review and built scopes for each division that I was working on I then built a subcontractors list and I spoke to each contractor individually and prepared them to receive drawings and specifications
  • At a later point Skanska got involved in federal work and I was able to show my ability to bring in my ability for electrical work on runways where I was able to shine by winning the work for what they called changing out Allsafe systems at a lot of the Air- Force bases My electrical degree help me immensely in this field
  • Soon In my tenure I was privileged to be promoted to a Senior Estimator and my first project I was placed with a second team of a senior estimators where I worked on a new project of a million square foot renovation of an addition to an existing mall
  • My next project I was coupled with one other senior estimator where we worked on converting the closed Fort Drum military base in upstate New York to a 1000 bed Federal prison.

  • I came to Merit/ Dover as an estimator/ Project manager and with startup company we were doing small restaurants and bagel shops but wanted to do bigger projects for larger clients
  • The owners had remarked how they would like to do work for the company, Brinker International So, I took it upon myself to find out who the East Coast Representative was, and I called the Steve Joyce, every day for 30 days until the gentleman decided to call me back and allow us to bid their work
  • We were able to bid a job down in Virginia for Brinker International and we were not successful, but we did very well on the project
  • Brinker considered us for a local bid work up near our area we were then successful on a dual concept project where we showed up in the other contractor and ended up finishing his project because he could not finish his contract out
  • As we became successful, we had become a noted company by other restaurateurs such as such as Ruby Tuesday Rainforest, and Chuck E Cheese
  • We were growing Fast I had to hire additional estimators and I took over seeing the estimated department but, also was promoted into the purchasing department where I was buying the materials for the projects, organizing and shipping materials to the job sites, buying the material, I had decided to open accounts so to order direct from the distributor'sthings such as toilet accessories door hardware and door and frames
  • I also took on negotiating contacts for subcontract subcontractors writing contracts and making sure scopes were solid soon I was made head of the purchasing department where I settled in for the next two years before leaving Merit/ Dover to join the Skanska team
  • My pride with Merit / Dover was I started with a company that was at $50,000 company and when I left was doing basically$10 million a year
  • I will not say that I did it, but I can say I help them along a lot of them help them along in their success.

  • I joined the estimating staff as a junior estimator I was taken under the wings of the senior staff and showing the ropes and mentored by 6 different senior estimators who would take me out to the field and got me talk to the to the contractors and even make me get up and work with them side by side to learn
  • I was also back then in a period where we didn't have computers, so we use scales tapes had ammoniabased drawings
  • I was taught from division 1 to division 16 at that time we colored cut and fills, structural, concrete, carpentry, and finishes of course as an electrical engineer at the time I knew how to do MEP take off very well
  • I moved through my learning quickly my peers were very impressed that I picked up things very quickly and I was very organized and very detailed they said I would do very well as I moved through the ranks
  • I was taught the cross reference all details and to always and always brief look and if you didn't understand to ask so I was quickly promoted from a junior estimator to an estimator 1, 6 years that I spent with Dick Corporation were enlightening and I believe that my desire and my career aspirations for what I was going to be and that was what I wanted was to be a senior estimator.
