Screen potential mothers/donors for eligibility to donate umbilical cord blood by reviewing mothers’ medical chart and medical history.
• Educate the potential mother/donor about the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank (CCBB) and the concept of donating to a public cord blood bank so that an informed choice can be made regarding the voluntary donation of her infant’s cord blood.
• Obtain informed consent from eligible mother/donor by providing information and discussion of the consent form, culminating with a written and signed document.
• Obtain delivery and neonatal information by reviewing the medical records of the mother and infant donor, and accurately record information on the appropriate forms, performing follow up with OB clinical staff when needed.
• Ensure and maintain complete confidentiality with regard to identity of the maternal/infant donor pair, as well as results of any tests and procedures, in accordance with CCBB standard operating procedures.
• Collect umbilical cord blood from the placenta and umbilical cord of consented donors in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements. Accurately complete all forms related to collection and delivery.
• Accurately enter collection and donor information into the CCBB database.
• Ensure that maternal blood samples for infectious disease testing are collected by the collection site phlebotomist according to standard operating procedures. If samples are missed or are otherwise unusable, facilitate the collection of new samples and/or draw maternal samples. Accurately complete all forms and labeling related to maternal sample blood draws.
• Assist Team Lead with obtaining a detailed medical history from mothers/donors following delivery and with an informed consent. Record information on the medical history form and accurately enter into the CCBB database as required.
• Prepare the collected umbilical cord blood unit and maternal blood samples for delivery to the CCBB Processing Laboratory for processing and storage according to CCBB standard operating procedures. 2 Cord Blood Collector
• Participate in the Quality Assurance Program for the development, implementation, and evaluation of cord blood banking.
• Be an ambassador for the CCBB program. Establish good working relationships with hospital personnel involved in the cord blood collection process. Develop and enhance all aspects of CCBB with the goal of promoting public cord blood donation and increasing collections of units suitable for banking and/or research.
• Professionally represent CCBB in interactions with other hospital departments.
• Assist with annual training requirements for healthcare professionals (HCPs) that collect cord blood.
• Complete Quality Assurance logs to ensure proper maintenance of collection room and storage areas.
• Complete all initial and annual training competencies.
