  • Officiates special services such as weddings, funerals, baptisms and nursing home services with assistance of Deacons, Deaconesses, Associate Ministers, and Church Mother
  • Leads programs such as worship, study, fellowship and service opportunities
  • Facilitates guidance programs focused on helping middle and high school students prepare for college or vocational education opportunities
  • Also, periodically reviews student report cards and publicly affirmed all students that receives special certificates, or entry level jobs
  • Most of these youngsters came from low-income at-risk contexts
  • Coordinates and spearheads programs to increase church members' service throughout community
  • Partnered with city officials, non-profit resource organizations, civic groups and members of public for outreach to at-risk children
  • Developed mandatory 7-8-month study period for anyone that wants me to officiate at their wedding
  • Was privileged to have such distinguished scholars as Cain Hope Felder, New Testament professor, formerly of Howard University, now deceased, and Gayraud Wilmore, historian, theologian, scholar, who prior to his passing taught at several prestigious seminaries, one of which was Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), Atlanta, GA speak for us
  • We also had John Patton, Jr., He played in The Color Purple teach us Negro Spirituals as we celebrated our choir's annual day
  • Finally, we were privileged to have Reverend Allan Boesak, Anti-Apartheid leader and colleague of deceased President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela preach for our Sunday morning Service
  • Finally, we were privileged to have as our special guests on separate occasions, retired California State Judge Horace Wheatley and former Oakland Mayor, Elihu Harris as guest speakers
  • Worked with other churches in our district association to host a scholarship concert with past United States Secretary of State, Dr
  • Condelezza Rice as guest concert pianist

  • This was done in accord with United Methodism's Book of Discipline
  • Coordinated and spearheaded programs to increase church members' service throughout community

  • Established and managed church budget of $100,000.00 per year
  • Found Church in July of 1983 with a $10,000.00 T-Bill and $300.00 banked
  • When I left in 1988, total banked funds were at $40,000.00
  • Due to steady stewardship classes, we were, by 1986, able to file a fully funded budget of $100,000.00 per annum
  • At the inception of my pastorship (1983), 19 people were in attendance in Sunday Morning worship
  • Shattuck's median age was around 73
  • By 1988, attendance had grown to around 65 per week Sunday
  • Demographically wise, the medium age had dropped to 30 years old
  • Sanctuary held approximately 200 attendees
  • Due to skills and dedication of a licensed contractor in the membership, we were able to utilize his skills to repair and/or replace degraded aspects of Shattuck's physical plant, thereby saving the congregation several thousand dollars in repair and upkeep costs
  • Invited such outstanding Sunday Morning speakers as a descendant of Hiram Revels, post-Civil War AME preacher and Senator from Mississippi
  • Also, was privileged to have various members of Oakland, CA City Council speak for us on Sundays
