Summary

Current categorical adult-neurology PGY-4 resident at the Baylor Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas. I started my journey in Pakistan, completing my high school, after which I moved to the UAE to complete my A levels. Afterwards, I went on to pursue a bachelor's in physiology at Newcastle University in the UK, after which I completed my medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland - Bahrain campus. Since then, I have been pursuing an online master's degree in applied neuroscience. I matched into a categorical internal medicine program in Beaumont, Texas, after which I transitioned to my PGY-2 year at my current institution. I have been drawn to neurology from a young age, due to a combination of curiosity and exposure. Seeing my father's passion, as a neurosurgeon, for his work and the complexity of cases always inspired me. As I experienced medicine for myself, my interest in vascular and endovascular neurology bloomed, with me knowing even before residency what my goals for fellowship were. At my current institution, I have worked closely with all my attendings to increase my knowledge and improve my thought process when dealing with complex neurological cases. With my particular interest in vascular neurology, I have taken extra rotations with the stroke team, to learn as much passively I can to better myself. I am currently completing a rotation with the interventional neurology team at the University of Toledo, which is where I will be undertaking my fellowship. I have had the pleasure of working and living in multiple countries and experiencing different healthcare systems, allowing me to bring diversity and a broader mindset to my way of practice.

Work History

PGY4 Neurology Resident

Baylor Scott and White Memorial Hospital
07.2023 - Current
  • I am currently a PGY3 Neurology Resident at BSW. In this program, i have the opportunity to be taught by experts in every subspecialty of neurology and get daily exposure to bread-and-butter neurology as well as rare neurological pathologies such as West Nile and CJDs. Being a Tertiary center, there is a high volume of vascular neurology patients, which has allowed me immense first-hand experience to grow and cultivate my skill set in the field. Being a high-level care center with a robust neuro-endovascular team, I have had the opportunity to take patients from the ED to the angio-suite and oversee multiple endovascular procedures, which is my current career goal. Due to the variety of clinical presentation i feel confident that when i graduate, i will never be dumbfounded and be successful in practice even without a fellowship.

Intern

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas
07.2022 - 06.2023
  • I completed my intern year of internal medicine at Baptist Hospital. Here I was exposed to a wide range of pathology and given a high degree of independence to practice general medicine and build up experience and confidence. The ICU rotation was the most meaningful as I got to manage critically ill neurological cases, some of which had to be transferred out to higher-level care centers. Not only did it continuously spark my interest in the field, but also the high-intensity care that is required for cases that do not have a simple outcome.

Sub-internship in Neurology

The Aga Khan University Hospital
12.2018 - 12.2018
  • I completed my sub-internship in Neurology at the top medical college and hospital in Pakistan. In contrast to my prior electives, I enjoyed much more responsibility, starting the day by examining all admitted and new ER patients and staffing with the attending on rounds, after which I would spend the rest of the day in the clinic, electrophysiology lab, and procedure room. I was involved in the care of multiple Parkinson’s disease patients within the first week, along with patients with MS, Dystonia, epilepsy, and upper motor neuron diseases. For me, this was one of the best clinical learning experiences and only solidified my goal of pursuing a residency in neurology.

Clinical Elective in Paediatric Neurosurgery

Temple Street Children's Hospital
03.2018 - 04.2018
  • Having worked with and seen plentiful of adults, I then ventured to undertake an elective in Pediatric Neurosurgery to further myself within the field. During this elective, i had a more hands-on experience, where i assisted the attendings within the OR with cases like syringomyelia drainage and brain tumor resections. Outside of the OR I attended the clinic with my attendings, where i got to see pre-surgical screening and post-surgical management, allowing me to cement the full breadth of the specialty.

Neurosurgery Observership

Gates Vascular Institute
03.2017 - 04.2017
  • I undertook my first neurosurgery observership in Buffalo, New York, under Dr. Adnan Siddiqui, Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery. I joined the teams for early morning rounds, followed by a full day of in the OR, participating in complex cases, including aneurysm clippings, skull base tumor resection, and correction of Chiari malformations. Here, I also got my first exposure to the endovascular side of neurology and was instantly drawn to the field. Watching the surgeons achieve reperfusion in emergent endovascular thrombectomies and following up on the patients the next day to see the change in their NIHSS was astonishing. I also had the opportunity to be involved in collecting data for a study of the correlation between the time of rtPA administration and prognosis.

Clinical Elective

Kings Brook Jewish Medical Center
06.2016 - 07.2016
  • As my first clinical medical elective, which I undertook in the summer of 2016, I spent 2 weeks in the Department of Internal Medicine and the remainder in Neurology under Dr Francios. It was a new but enthralling learning experience examining patients and integrating knowledge into clinical practice. My responsibilities included pre-rounding and chart-checking patients in the stroke unit, presenting them in front of the team, staffing the patients with my attending, and writing their notes for the supervising residents to check.

Interests

Seeing my elders, including my father, being so immersed in work all the time, I knew from a young age that I wanted to live a balanced life and thus always make sure to have a life outside of my career. Since I was young, I've always participated in whatever sport I can get into. I've been a member of the school teams and university teams for football, cricket, volleyball, table tennis, and touch rugby. Recently, I've been getting into pickleball with colleagues from work. Working out is a routine for me, and I make sure to go after work regardless of how tired I am. I enjoy hosting friends, traveling to different cities and countries, and exploring the local culture and cuisine. When I'm not outside being social, I spend time at home pursuing DIY projects and have a particular interest in interior design and landscaping. Music is an integral part of my life, and I have been playing instruments, namely the guitar and drums, since I was a teen. Ever since moving to the US, I have attended as many concerts as I can make time for, with hopes to see all of the bands I love, in person, at least once.
