# 4 Document Rendezvous (DR) & Redesign

Pershing LLC: A Wholly owned subsidy of Bank of New York Mellon January 2008 – September 2009

Team Member

Team Size: 5

Technologies: CICS, DB2, COBOL, MQ-Series, Endevor, M4 Insync, TraceMaster, DumpMaster

Description:

Pershing Re-engineered business transactions uses document rendezvous processing. The process of marrying transactions with documents is called Document Rendezvous. When a business transaction is initiated, documents could have been in the system or documents could come later. A generic Rendezvous system designed to remember which transactions are waiting for document and when the matching document arrives, a transaction is notified of documents arrival.

Document Rendezvous does the automation of relating documents (which are scanned and maintained by Pershing’s Proprietary IMAGING system) for every business transaction. Document rendezvous polls request into imaging for a particular account number with some additional search criteria and corresponding responses are being received from imaging and the docs are been related to the particular business transaction in Workflow. Whenever a user wants to take an action on a particular request, DR provides the corresponding values for the docs and front end paints documents based on the DR response. Only workflow-enabled systems can use document rendezvous.

The Redesign part of the Document rendezvous project is to reduce the communication overhead and processing overhead between mainframe systems and the distributed application servicing the requests because of polling mechanism which had a 15 minute delay between every poll. This caused a high delay in completing the rendezvous process and for the transaction to complete. The redesign is to remove the polling between mainframe and the distributed applications and change it to be triggered on new document arrival so that rendezvous will complete quicker.

The Redesign of polling mechanism reduced mainframes CPU time by 40% which had resulted in a savings of about 0.5 million dollars per year and Average time for a document to get rendezvous is reduced by 99%

Role & Responsibilities: Responsibilities include interaction with onsite clients and team members to obtain complex financial business requirements for DR project, translating requirements into technical specifications and Implementation. It also includes unit and integration testing of applications with Front end and Source systems, which are to be workflow enabled.

Proposed the Redesign of polling mechanism in DR and took leadership role in feasibility analysis, design, construction, testing and implementation of the DRR.

# 5 Activity Engine (AE)

Pershing LLC: A Wholly owned subsidy of The Bank of New York, New York May 2006 – July 2008 (6 months)

Team member

Team Size: 12

Technologies: CICS, DB2, COBOL, MQ-Series, VSAM, JCL, Endevor, File Aid, Xpeditor

Description:

Activity engine acts as a centralized repository of all information where all other Pershing system has to register their actions. Users can search the status of their requests at any particular time using the Enterprise id, which will be generated at the time the user enters a request in their particular source systems.

Activity engine provides various services like generate enterprise id, registering to AE, updating the postings in AE, etc., for Source systems, which can use those services and interact using MQ-series to update AE database. AE also provides Front end services like search for status and search for history with various search criteria options. Front end uses the services to paint the NetXOffice Activity status screens based on users search options.

Enterprise Activity Engine runs on the IBM’s mainframe z/OS platform and would serve as the centralized repository for all business events and activities that happen at Pershing. This would provide users a view of all activities in an account, an office, or an IBD, accurately and timely. The initial view of the activities will be on a summary level and users would be able to drill down into detail business information directly from the summary display. The user would also be able to view the lifecycle events associated with a request, or its audit trail, and drill into the detail associated with every activity of a transaction’s lifecycle. Activity Engine was built with generic interfaces such that implementation of transactions of new business processes could be done easily and without much effort.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include interacting with onsite clients and team members to obtain complex financial business requirements, translating requirements into technical specifications, implementing in the form of services, which in turn is used by the presentation Layer (Front End Architecture). It also includes unit and integration testing of applications with Front end and Source systems, which are to be workflow enabled.

This way, workflow is a tool that helps enterprises achieve greater throughput, improve consistency, increase efficiency, shorten turnaround times, and eventually improve customer satisfaction.

Enterprise Workflow Engine is Pershing’s proprietary software product that delivers a comprehensive scalable technical solution that can be enhanced and expanded to support re-engineering of business processes, T+1, STP (Straight Through Processing) and other business initiatives.

Pershing’s Workflow Engine runs on the IBM’s mainframe z/OS platform and is implemented as a set of reusable enterprise services that can be invoked from any other platform. The participants of the system can interact with the Engine through the Net Exchange™ Office, Pershing’s proprietary broker workstation for back office investment professionals.

Pershing received silver honors in the 2004 “Global Excellence in Workflow Awards” for the implementation of its workflow engine. The “Global Excellence in Workflow Awards” is instituted by the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) and the Workflow and Reengineering International Association (WARIA).
