(PIT) Point in time Homeless count of Chicago 2014-current
On the coldest night of the year those that are experiencing homelessness seek refuge from the bitter cold inside shelters, hospitals, airports, warming centers and on busses and trains. These individuals are interviewed and counted by staff. Teams of volunteers depart all over the city searching in alleys, under bridges and around tent compounds for any individuals unable to make it indoors. Armed with hats, gloves, and coats in exchange for a short interview in order to add those vital individuals to the final count. The final count of the number of individuals experiencing homlessness is directly correlated to the amount of federal funding recieved by the city to combat homelessness.
