EXPLANATION LETTER
Hiring Personnel -
I would like to begin my new career with full disclosure and honesty. Below I am disclosing my past criminal record; one which does not define me, dictate who I am, or what I can do. In March 2009, I was charged with a DUI in Pasco, WA. Then in February 2019, I was convicted of DUI Vehicular Homicide in Kent, WA. I served 63 months (Feb. 2019 - May 2024) in Washington State Correctional facilities for my offenses.
While incarcerated I worked two years as a dog trainer and three years as a teacher aide. As a dog trainer, I helped rehabilitate dogs and prepare them for a forever home. As a teacher aide, I helped students (fellow inmates) obtain their high school diploma and begin entry level college courses. In addition to working while incarcerated, I attended college courses. I furthered my studies in Business Administration and Human Social Services through Walla Walla Community College.
After serving 63 months in Department of Corrections custody, I completed 60 days of in-patient treatment through American Behavioral Health Systems (ABHS) and completed a one-year substance use disorder program through Valley Cities (completed May 2025). I have not touched alcohol or partaken in any drug in the past 7 years (since February 23, 2019). Still, I was afraid I would not be able to find employment because of my background, however I was given a great opportunity by a local dog daycare and boarding facility, 24/7 Dogs, where I was employed for over a year (Aug. 2024 – Nov. 2025) before they ceased operations.
I can understand why you may be hesitant to hire someone with a felony background, but I am better than my background record suggests. I am dedicated to my sober life and beginning a successful career. I have recently completed an accredited course through the HCA (WA State Healthcare Authority) to become a Peer Support Specialist in training and will be completing an Associates in Human Social Services in June from Walla Walla Community College.
I really hope to begin working within a team. I believe I can be an asset to your organization and others in the community. Additionally, if you hire me, you will be eligible for Work Opportunities Tax Credits, which could save the organization some money this year. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to prove my worth to you and your organization.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Slater
