I started a small excavating business on the side in October of 2018 while currently employed full time. In Janurary of 2020 my business partner and I decided it was time to leave our full time jobs to build our small business. As the co-owner I have numerous responsibilities. I am the first one on the jobsite to meet the potential customers to view the scope of the work and give any professional suggestions that I may have. I also carry the responsibility to price these jobs at a fair price to the customer, while also generating enough income to keep our employees, ourselves, and our bills paid. From that point I schedule our work and plan it out according to the weather and where the job may be located to prevent long commutes with our equipment. Once the job starts im on site to help with the work, and also oversee that the customer is getting quality work. After the work is completed I will meet with the customer one last time to review what has been done and receive payment.

I started at Shelly Company in 2016 as a laborer. After a year and a half of being a laborer, I became recognized for my understanding of grades and layout. In mid 2017 I took over a position as a survey tech. In most cases I was the first or second guy to see new jobs after the bidding process. I would gather up plans and whatever other information I could get and go scope out the site. From there I would need to find the location of the work and use maps to begin finding control points to use for layout. After control was found I would use my maps and set more control to use on the job. Next came to topo process. I would take detailed topo shots of the entire job to ensure that the grades and limit lines were in fact where they said on the plans. Once the gps models were built I was back on the job to help the operators and laborers get the information and files they needed to proceed with the work. While the job was going on I was always subject to phone calls, texts and emails to provide more information for the jobs. Some examples would be, spreadsheets to provide tonnage and averages for asphalt and stone, or updating files to prevent mistakes that were originally in the plans. I would also deal with inspectors and engineers when problems did arise to come up with a logical plan to fix them.
