I created Hands of a Barbarian after working in spas for over 10 years. It has been an exciting endeavor to be in charge of a company, even if I am the only employee. At HoaB, the primary clientele is sports massage, stretching, and rehabilitation-style massage. Techniques utilized include deep tissue, myofascial, ASIS, PNF stretching, and KT taping. My duties while working independently have included the typical laundry services, handling the financial aspects, choosing and ordering products/retail, performing all massage types listed above, completing CEUs in compliance with my license and certification, and completing any of the other day-to-day activities associated with owning a business.
During my time at Athletico, I was in charge of maintaining cleanliness of the facilities, including wiping down every item utilized in rehabilitation sessions after every use, vacuuming when necessary, and regular laundry (washing, drying, and folding). When working directly with clients, I was in charge of running them through their prescribed exercises/stretches, exercise and anatomical education, and completion of documentation at the end of each session.
At TMSS, I was in charge of the day to day activities of the spa, including cleaning, laundry, restocking product and supplies, and performing massage. I performed the following types of massage: swedish, deep tissue, myofascial, hot stones, prenatal, and a variety of specialty treatments including scrubs and mud masks.
While I enjoyed the interaction with the clients and the majority of my coworkers, I left TMSS as a few of those therapists I worked with were unable to keep up with the CDC recommended sanitation practices. When brought up to management, I was given the ultimatum of staying and dealing with the lack of cleanliness, or being fired. While it was an unfortunate incident, it was what prompted me to create my own business and flourish in the world of sports.
