I select a position for the day of a teacher who is absent at a multitude of schools within the town of Westwood Massachusetts. Once I arrive at the school and find the classroom, I follow the instructions left for me by the absent teachers and perform the assigned tasks. If there are no assignment tasks, I communicate with the students as to what they are working on and I make a plan going from there as to what the plan for the students should be. As children are learning and becoming themselves, I must adapt to situations that arise in the bathroom and on school grounds, thus I have been able to think of problem-solving solutions and ways to maintain order and peace constructively.
During the spring semester of this past year, I worked as a Librarian Assistant at the Flaxman Library. In this position, I sorted and recorded inventory, restocked and managed the sorting of books, and assisted customers with any questions and concerns about the building and the library. With there being only four staff roughly during the evenings, I assisted in returning the library to its original state and helped close down the area. My time here has improved my patience and attentiveness to details while keeping a fast and orderly pace.
I successfully created and fostered a safe, welcoming environment for all my campers. Throughout six weeks, I alongside my co-counselor took care of a group of children between the ages of 6-8. My responsibilities included overseeing various recreational activities (arts and crafts, swimming, canoe, archery, and more), providing all campers with meals and making sure their needs were met, planning activities to engage the campers in all groups, and so much more. Overall I gained and grew my knowledge and enhanced my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. I do not take this enriching experience lightly as it was super impactful in my personal growth and created an incredible summer for many kids.
My duties included everything revolving around the building, meaning that I was responsible for front desk activities (answering phone calls, signing customers in, helping with any questions and concerns, scheduling), assisting customers with wall safety, procedures, and equipment use, managing bookings, as well as finalizing all payments (climbing for a set time, parties, or group bookings, in both card and cash payments). I ensured that I understood what the expectations were for myself and the company and upheld that standard for all customers while creating a fun environment for all that came in.
