Transported vehicles around the state of Michigan.
Worked for a small family owned jewelry company where I marketed jewelry, women's' clothing apparel, met with clients across the state to fill orders, packed and shipped orders across the United States, attended clothing shows as a dealer, and on occasion was a buyer for the company.
I began my principalship for two elementary buildings. After passing a successful bond issue and construction project, the two building populations were combined into one.
I was an assistant principal with a building of over 1000 students. After a successful millage proposal and building project I was principal for a large elementary school of 800 students and 50+ staff members.
I worked for the county Missaukee County Emergency Medical Services as an EMT during the summer months and on weekends. I also spent time with deputies patrolling the county highways and roads.
I spent my entire teaching career in Reed City where I taught various grades and subjects at the elementary and middle school levels. Coaching basketball and track gave me the opportunity to interact in the athletic arena. I also worked with the Reed City Competitive Marching Band. I left my teaching position to become a middle school assistant principal.
I worked as an EMT for the Osceola County Emergency Medical Services on a part-time basis.
Eagle Village is a non-profit foster care program that specializes in services for young people affected by abuse, neglect, or possess risky behaviors. I taught young men social development classes over three summers.
I have always gained great personal satisfaction in the service industry Providing excellent customer service in a timely manner is paramount Critical thinking and problem solving is a must to be an effective and efficient leader Clearly communicating in a respectful manner with others can make or break any situation In all of my work experiences and personal relationships I have found that active listening, interpersonal skills and teamwork are tenants of solid outcomes Having a musical and athletic background I enjoy speaking to large or small groups of people One just needs to be humble, sincere and lead with grace People are no fools, they can tell when someone is being genuine or not It's how you carry yourself and represent your organization
undefinedI enjoyed working in education my entire career with dedicated individuals who put children first. Thus our programs were able to be recognized for many local accolades and state awards over time. I humbly share with you that on one occasion I was selected "Principal of the Year" for the entire half of Northern Lower Michigan. Because of the high academic expectations of staff, the McBain School was the SCHOOL of CHOICE in the Cadillac area. There was always a waiting list of children who desired to be part of our child-centered environment. I am proud to say all of the successes were due to the efforts of the staff and students as well as the strong base of supportive parents. One of my greatest joys in life was having the privilege in playing the piano each morning as the children entered the school building before school. Since our building housed K-12 students I was able to see students from all grade levels - what a way to begin the day! Even now I still receive comments from students of all ages about the days when Mr. Smith would play in the hall. I was very blessed!
It is one's responsibility to give back to the community that serves you. While in McBain I was elected on more than one occasion to the City Council. I thoroughly enjoyed being President of the McBain Fire Department Board. During a short period of time I was able to help facilitate the procurement of 5 pieces of fire apparatus. My membership on SeniorCare Ministries and the Northland Community Church Deacon Team were excellent experiences. Now that I live back in my hometown of Lake City I spend my extra time serving as President of the Ardis Missaukee County Library Executive Board, Chairman for the Missaukee County Commission on Aging, am a member of the Lake City Planning Commission and help a local church by playing the piano for their Sunday morning church services. I also enjoy sharing my musical skills (piano/accordion) with area care facilities and at special events.
My hobbies range from announcing for the girl's basketball games in McBain, trout fishing, and chasing fire trucks. I have had a fascination with fire trucks since I was a little boy. And yes, I was a volunteer fireman! I actually own a real 1954 Seagrave Fire Truck. When time permits I even do a little canning!
After two years I continue to recover from my challenging COVID battle. To say it was a miraculous outcome is nothing but the truth. The medical staff had told me I was not going to survive so I needed to choose the day/time they would disconnect my forced air machine and subsequently I would die! By some luck but mostly the grace of God, a doctor showed up from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and tried a new regiment. His intervention saved my life. I've been on quite the journey.
