  • Title of Study: Utilizing a Novel Computer Model to Evaluate Drug Sensitivity in Cancer Treatment Testing: A Strategy Design for Dynamic Precision Medicine
  • Abstract: Conventional cancer therapy may not be viable for all patients, and thus a personalized strategy has arisen. This strategy is called Current Precision Medicine (CPM). CPM, however, does not yet have the ability to optimally view cancer treatment for some patients. Thus a new approach to precision medicine - Dynamic Precision Medicine (DPM) has been recently developed. DPM differs from CPM in that it focuses on the penultimate treatment state of the tumor. Although to date, DPM has been studied in simulations, specific methods must be optimized to ultimately apply DPM to clinical settings. Here, we investigated Dynamic Precision Medicine using a strategy design. First, 250 simulated patients were assigned to each of two cohorts utilizing an evolutionary classifier that evaluates whether or not a virtual patient should benefit from DPM given specific inputs. These cohorts were the benefit cohort in terms of DPM and the no-benefit cohort in terms of DPM. Next, these cohorts were randomly divided into a CPM arm and a DPM arm in order to run a baseline simulation. Second, simulations utilizing incorrect drug sensitivity values were conducted in order to test how misspecification may impact results. Our findings demonstrated that DPM does, in fact, retain its benefit over CPM for a broad range of incorrect values. Thus, strategy designs may be sufficient in further study of DPM, though DPM requires greater investigations with alternative trial designs. DPM could revolutionize the way that physicians prescribe treatment to cancer patients, extending the lives of thousands.
  • Project Highlights - Throughout my project, I extensively utilized the skills that I taught myself sophomore year in order to prepare for my research. I taught myself differential and integral calculus, statistics, and the coding language R. I used statistics and R the most, and my project was almost entirely conducted within R. I really enjoyed coding, and this was one of the reasons that I decided to study data science in college.
