Daily visual inspection of project while walking to my area for things that have changed , ground conditions , overhead structures . any underground work or people.
Visually inspecting my work area is my responsibility . I trust nobody . I always make sure swing radius has not been compromised !
Ground-make sure that nobody has disturbed my crane pad or put anything where it could impact my crane or duties that day.
Crane- now this is where my decades of working with cranes comes into play. I started working with cranes in 1994, so i have learned by years of good people showing me what too look for and what is wrong when you find it and the probable cause of it.
While on this job , i was in charge of making sure lift plans were up to date and all criteria was met for the lifts that were taking place such as matting, spreader bars , proper sized rigging and shackles, including pick points (radius} and set points. Started as one of the Heavy Lift Operators , my attention to detail showed through time and time again . We don't get a second chance in our field , IT WILL TO BE RIGHT!
As the first operator on site , i worked with crane company to organize crane parts for assembly. This is THE most dangerous crane i have run in my time ! it was during assembly that i was coming up with ways to positively lock the air brake system and use the drum paw to ensure that the lock was locked down and safe ! During that first 388k lb lift i was notified that i was to make sure that the other operators were shown the workings of these cranes and how they were to be used, as i said DANGEROUS ! Entire bridge was completed without a single incident from the derrick cranes .
