Laboratory Assistant

Louisiana State University Life Sciences Department
Baton Rouge, LA
08.2018 - 05.2020
  • Helping the three graduate students with whatever they needed assistance with, and the laboratory-wide responsibilities of cleaning and maintenance of the fish tanks and other important equipment
  • For helping the graduate students, I would get directly involved with their experiments, from either acting as an assistant to bearing the responsibility of running it on my own
  • For one experiment, I was entrusted with running it all on my own for multiple days in a row while the graduate student had to leave town
  • The experiment involved exposing fish eggs to water mixed with varying concentrations of crude oil plus a control
  • I had to change out the solutions every other day and hand-mix the solutions with the right concentrations
  • Then I had to monitor each Pyrex glass dish (that stored the eggs) by counting and analyzing hundreds of individual eggs during the development process, and make note of abnormalities (internal bleeding, edemas, etc.)
  • By the end of the experiment, we obtained satisfactory results, meaning I contributed meaningfully to its success
  • Student Worker Position: 20 Hours a week, $7.50/hour salary
