Antique Store Clerk and Assistant Manager

Salvage LTD
07.2012 - 05.2015

Salvage LTD was an unusual brick & mortar that influenced my own online business . Primarily due to its eclecticism paired with iits thoughtful, sophisticated and harmonious aesthetic. Much of the inventory was rare, valuable mid-century modern furniture. not contemporary, mid-century modern style furniture, but the real deal, original, distinctive pieces, many of which were designed by big names: Haywood Wakefield, Isamu Noguchi, Vladimir Kagan, Eero Saarinen. We sold tables that looked like elegant UFO's, chairs lamps that looked like miniature planets and glass-encased mushroom clods. I was an avid collector of books and records and passionate about art, but had never given any thought to furniture, much less conceived of it as a potential art form. Walking through the Sore changed this, quickly.

But in addition to selling the mid-century modern furniture pieces, we sold actual art: paintings, photographic prints, Africa and Oceanic masks and sculptures, turntables (yes!) and even film props.

We also sold vintage bicycles, cameras, and a small but promising selection of LPs books, and vintage apparel, which I'm proud to say I expanded , and, in doing so, had a small but significant hand in expanding and diversifying out customer base. Duties and contributions included:

  • Greeted guests and answered questions about merchandise.
  • Processed transactions efficiently using point-of-sale systems, ensuring accurate pricing and payment collection.
  • Supported marketing efforts through organizing special events such as auctions, workshops, or themed sales days.
  • Assisted in the acquisition of merchandise, via flea markets, estate sales, garage sales, antique fairs, and individual consigneers.
  • Recruited two independent contractors socially, one of whom repaired and restored high-end antiques by trade, and the other of whom did the same with vintage bicycles. Acted as a liaison between them and the store owner, passing along quotes, invoices, and paychecks, and scheduling and overseeing pickups, drop offs and on-site repairs.

  • Provided backroom support by organizing incoming shipments, tagging merchandise correctly, and restocking shelves as needed.
  • Enhanced customer satisfaction by providing efficient and knowledgeable assistance in product selection and locating items.
  • Removed scratches from CDs using heavy-duty resurfacing machine note: again, unsure of the specific model but was essentially the same as the machine at Flipude Records, reminiscent of a bench grinder
  • Sorted, processed and organized incoming 45s which were arguably In Your Ear's hottest items. At the location in Boston in Commonwealth avenue, rare and valuable soul and funk 45s were plentiful, to say the least. Many of our customers were DJs, or aspired to be. For those who don't come in with the then-ubiquitous Vestax portable turntables and headphones, I was often tasked with assisting the greener DJs in their quests for sample-able tracks.
  • The plus side was that this allowed me to make creative contributions and assist in brainstorming. But playing track after track in the store sound system wasn't viable, and so the owner set up a second listening station with headphones at the front counter so that we could assist and supervise without annoying other customers ir neglecting other duties.
