- For a while, I was asked to fill in as Second Helper
- Duties included running catfish and taking samples and temperatures by hand, gunning furnace, running furnace and routine maintenance
- Currently, I’m a Ladleman
- I read the refractory each heat to determine integrity is sufficient to continue service, as failure could cause a loss of containment of 50 tons of liquid steel
- I maintain all mechanical components of the ladle, operate excavator to clean ladles, slag, and steel for electric arc furnace operation, utilize a KT grant machine to tear out & replace refractory
- Following safety procedure is paramount in this environment, as a small mishap could endanger the lives of others

- As a Switchman, I assisted in the transition of trains, controlled the speed of the trains using precise car-length measurements through radio communication with the conductors, compiled orders of various materials to be unloaded into hoppers and fed into the furnace for the production of steel, transported ladles of molten metal from the furnace to desired location, maintained a daily data log including the whereabouts of stored train cars and their contents, and followed strict safety regulations

- This entailed constructing a ventilation system for coal face using fiberglass tubing and fans
- I also performed roof bolting which required me to drill holes and install roof and rib bolts to ensure they were reinforced
- I was promoted to Belt Repairman
- On this team, I inspected belts, belt structure, and rollers to ensure they were properly working on a daily basis
- On occasion, we removed old belts and installed new where strict safety regulations and procedures were key to success

- I worked on a crew that constructed seals that blocked off unused areas of our mine
- This required us to drill through rock to install rebar, create structures using wire panels and tin sheets, and fill said structures with gunite which sealed off access to the area
