I have served in eight church appointments over the last twenty-two years. I am in an itinerant denomination so moving is not unusual. Some of my moves were to be closer to the university or to help a church for a brief period get over a difficult time.
Each place has taught me or sharpened my skills. I am gifted at discerning the skills and gifts in others and helping them to live into those talents. I also love looking for creative ways to help congregations reach outside their doors and be part of the community. This forming of relationships helps those on the outside, who are fearful of churches, feel more at ease to reach out when they realize they need a church or a pastor.
I have also been working with my current appointment to have community meals with people who have different views or opinions and to get to know each other. We do this by coming to the table together, sharing a meal and our stories via prompts to answer without judgment or trying to fix each other. We simply want to know how we got to be who we are and to let this aid our way to bridge gaps.
I am discerning a call to help congregations by not focusing on just one church but various churches and denominations. We have to find ways to love each other and get along. We need to move from survival mode to thriving. I believe Jesus wants us to do more than just keep our heads above water. This position felt right as soon as I saw it listed. I hope you will consider me for an interview for this position.
I did the overall work of ministry and administration here. There was a difference, though. One church on this charge was mourning the loss of a long time pastor and the other church is the reason she was moved. I helped the grieving church stop taking their grief and anger out on each other and begin to work together again. I can explain how if I get an interview.
I also helped them to part ways with the other church on the charge. You want healing if possible but it was clear they were going in opposite directions. The other church on the charge disaffiliated from the denomination. I left this church after helping them part ways. It was no longer a full time appointment and I am guaranteed a full-time appointment. I worked myself out of a job there because it was best for them. This was the case with the other two short term appointments as well. Occasionally, churches thrive by ending a partnership that is not a good fit.
This was a part time appointment while I was going to Duke Divinity School at Duke University for my MDiv.
I pastored two other churches prior to this for a total of 8 years prior to this church and before attending Duke for my MDiv. During that time, I started out in the UMC's COS and ended that to get my B.S. in Religion at Mount Olive College and then headed to Duke. I can provide info on the other two churches and the years of various jobs prior to this in an interview. I worked in protective services in the Dept of Social Services in Greene Co. and in the Dept. of Transportation as Admin. Asst. I also sold office supplies and was a Dental Asst and and an oral surgical asst.
