Work History

Community Service Officer

CIty of Orlando
03.1985 - 11.2020
  • I worked my entire career at the Orlando Police Department. I began in the Communications section, answering 911 calls. I was trained in how to effectively communicate with victims on the telephone. I worked in the Report Review Department. I learned the Florida State Statutes and read officer's incident reports to make sure all of the pertinent information required by the state of Florida was documented. The data would be collected and on an annual basis, be sent to the state of Florida government for statistical purposes of crimes reported each year.
  • I became a Community Service Officer (CSO) after I graduated from the police academy (academics only). I completed a field training course for several months learning all aspects of the job.
  • I learned how to use a police radio and how to operate a marked civilian police vehicle. I was dispatched to non emergency service calls, including residential, commercial and vehicle burglaries, missing persons and lost/found property. I interviewed the victim/complainant requesting all the pertinent information required to document the incident. If evidence was present, I would collect, tag and enter it into evidence. I also know how to fingerprint suitable surfaces.
  • The CSO unit was always the first units to be dispatched to traffic incidents, including school crossing assignments and crashes. I was taught how to properly direct pedestrian traffic at school crossings to keep them safe. I have directed traffic for traffic signals malfunctioning, special events and parades. I also performed these duties many times in inclement weather, to include heavy rainstorms and hurricane aftermath.
  • I learned the state of Florida traffic laws. I would interview the drivers of the crash and determine if a law was violated. I would issue a Traffic Citation for the offense. I had to deal with angry driver's, however, I was able to calm them after reviewing the options they had, to include traffic court. I have testified before a judge several times.
  • I patrolled assigned zones to look for parking violations and suspicious vehicles.
  • I was a Field Training Officer and taught many recruits all aspects of the job, writing detailed and concise daily observation reports. I also served as an Acting Supervisor for when my supervisor was absent for a day or for weeks.
