- I had to get special permission to attend this band camp because it was primarily for 7th and 8th grade middle-school students
- After auditioning, I earned the 1st-chair position in the trumpet section in the top middle school band
- At the end of the program, I received special recognition and a certificate as the “Outstanding
- Brass Student." I was 10 years old
- (2) The following summer, I auditioned and received a performance scholarship to attend the same Texas Music
- Academy at TLU
- I earned the 1st-chair position once again
- (3) For every year I have attended the Summer Band Camp at St
- Mary’s University, I have earned the 1st- chair trumpet in the Gold bandwhich is the top band for that program

- I earned the first chair as a middle-schooler competing against high school trumpet players

- According to the SAYWE website, brass players must be at least 12 years old and in the 7th grade
- I was first accepted into this program as an 11-year-old 6th grader
- (5) I have already auditioned for and have been accepted to my fifth year in the trumpet section of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio (YOSA)
- YOSA is considered the most-competitive Honor Band in San Antonio
- Each instrumentalist must go through a rigorous audition that requires each musician to perform pre-selected etudes as well as an evaluation of prepared solo pieces
- According to the YOSA website, trumpet players must be at least 13 years old and in the 8th grade in order to audition
- I was first accepted into YOSA as a 12 year old in the 7th grade
- (6) As an 8th grader, I competed in my first State-Wide Solo & Ensemble competition sponsored by the Texas
- Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS)
- I received a “Superior” ratingthe highest evaluation a performer for this competition
- I had to petition TAPPS to compete because this was a high-school competition
- TAPPS does not offer a middle-school solo & ensemble competition
- (7) As an 8th grader, I also competed in the State-Wide Instrumental Solo Competition sponsored by the Texas
- Christian Athletic League (TCAL)
- This also was a high-school level competition and I had to get special permission to compete as a middle-schooler
- Unlike the TAPPS Solo & Ensemble competition where I basically competed against other trumpet players, the TCAL competition was open to all instrumentalists (woodwind, brass, percussion, strings, piano, etc.)
- As an 8th grader, I placed second in the entire State of Texas.

- The ensemble’s mission is to provide a positive musical experience, in an artistic environment, for advanced wind and percussion players
- SAYWE is a supplemental program for music education in public and private schools in the region
- SAYWE rehearses and performs grade five and six (collegiate and professional) wind ensemble literature

- SAYWE serves as an ambassador of culture and youth performance for the city of San Antonio and the surrounding area

- SAYWE accepts musicians up until the age of 21 with a minimum age of 12 and in the seventh grade for brass players

- For the first time in its history, YOSA created its first Mariachi which “will provide a unique opportunity for the finest young mariachi musicians in San Antonio to learn and perform together with peers from all over the region.” The mariachi director is Miguel Guzman who is also the director of his own professional group, Los Caporales, and a former member of Mariachi Campanas de America—two of the best mariachi groups in the entire country
