I am a current employee with the Virginia Department of Corrections and began my career as a Correctional Officer, Institutional Investigator (Lieutenant) at Sussex II State Prison. I was promoted in 2017 to the Special Operations Unit-Gang Unit and currently assigned to the Office of Law Enforcement Services-Gang Unit. I have specialized in completing investigations within the prison setting with an emphasis on identifying, tracking and monitoring gang members within the department. As the Institutional Investigator at Sussex II State Prison I was designated as the Facility Gang Coordinator with an average population of 350 gang members. I was pro active in identifying these individuals as gang members and adhering to policy and procedure writing disciplinary infractions as needed to ensure the safety and security of the facility. I currently work with the Statewide Gang Unit and continue to identify and monitor inmates with gang affiliation throughout the state through interviews and monitoring of their telephone calls and email correspondence. I routinely respond to incidents at facilities across the state and assist the Facility Intel Teams in conducting interviews and determining the reason for the incident and if it is gang related. I am routinely asked by local Commonwealth Attorney's and have testified as an Expert Witness on gang related cases. I have attended several trainings on gang identification and are familiar with identifying individuals with gang affiliation based on tattoos, etc. I am currently certified by the Virginia Gang Investigators Association as a Gang Specialist, I have developed a rapport with Correctional Staff and outside Law Enforcement Agencies from across the state allowing a network of endless resources. I have interviewed and built a rapport with countless inmates either gang related or not based on my ability to remain professional during my day to day activities.
