  • Double checking and being very meticulous with labels and paperwork is critical to avoid any patient confidentiality or mix ups with different specimens and patients.

  • As I was wanting to explore more of the health department and their different occupational opportunities, I volunteered to work in the lab at the Specialty Care STD Clinic.
  • I learned how to collect and process specimens such as blood, urine, and different types of swabs.
  • Being very social and interactive with all patients that I encountered was vital in making this a comfortable environment for them.
  • Communication between co-workers and lead nurses, was fundamental in my day to day.
  • Cleanliness and organization was a big part in making the lab become a steady and constant flow throughout the busy days we would have throughout the week.

  • As a DIS, I was assigned different patients diagnosed tuberculosis in the Hillsborough.
  • I also do quick examinations and ask questions about how they are feeling and document any notes or requests they had for their assigned nurse case manager and doctor.
  • Collection of their sputum was another daily task I completed to bring back to the clinic lab for testing.
  • Communication with nurses and doctors, data entry at the end of the day and testing and processing in the lab are a few other daily tasks as a DIS.
  • Contact tracing with others my patients came in contact with, was key in preventing the spread.

  • When I wasn't out in the field, I was doing work via phone calls and emails with patients as well as assisting clinic nurses and front desk workers.

  • In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was a transporter for the hospital.
  • My duties were to transport any and all patients from all ages and units of the hospital.

  • I was also tasked to bring the deceased to the morgue.
  • Handling patients and different equipment like walkers, hospital beds, stretchers, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks were part of my day to day at the hospital.
