The Position
  
Census Outreach Specialist
  
The United States Constitution requires the nation to conduct a Census every ten years and the Census Bureau has been doing so since 1790. The Census is so much more than a questionnaire - its data influences our daily lives in innumerable ways: it computes our political representation, it determines funding for countless programs and services, and it is evaluated to make an incalculable number of decisions in both the public and private sectors. Contra Costa County is preparing to ensure a complete and accurate count of its diverse, hard-to-count populations and seeks bright, engaged interns to join our team.
  
Internships are part-time (up to 20 hours / week). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
  
Typical Tasks

* Develop "Get Out the Count" plan for your college / university, neighborhood or assigned area of the County (East or West), including engagement outlets and opportunities, best practices in conveying messages, and activating students and residents at-large 
* Research and data analysis to support outreach to Hard-To-Count communities 
* Contact and follow up with potential Complete Count Committee partners to increase participation among trusted messengers in Committee and Subcommittee meetings 
* Attend community meetings and events to promote Census participation or jobs 
* Communications: draft social media, review outreach materials, & analyze Census media 
* Operations: take notes at meetings, respond to the needs of partners, & streamline systems 
* Additional tasks as needed
  
Minimum Qualifications
  
Required:

* Mastery of Google Drive, Microsoft Suite and other tech tools 
* Passion for public service and the communities of Contra Costa County 
* Take excellent initiative, exhibit professionalism, and demonstrate strong critical thinking 
* Detail-oriented, ask good questions, motivated to learn, and driven to succeed 
* Ability to work from office in Martinez area and travel throughout assigned area (transit accessible) &/or work remotely. 
* Current enrollment in, or recent graduation from, an accredited college or university, or training program that leads to a diploma, program certificate, Associate, Bachelor, or advanced degree.
  
Desired Qualifications:

* Fluency in a foreign language of an immigrant community in Contra Costa County 
* Expertise in social media or graphic design 
* Experience working in fast-paced work environments and/or on teams which manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
