Work History
Principal Mechanical Engineer
Amazon Web Services, Inc.
09.2022 - 11.2023
As a trusted partner within the realm of global infrastructure technical leadership, I chaired bi-weekly technical forum, which served as a platform for deliberating new design ideas enabling critical evaluation for approval, follow-on work or rejection of proposed design and operational modifications within existing infrastructure.
Led design reviews for intricate and pivotal systems, categorizing them by site, region and architecture, challenged assumptions, identified risks while fostering a sense of collective responsibility and comprehension.
Layout complex problems into easily understandable schematics or flowcharts, educating cross-functional teams and senior management on technical matters, emerging technologies and industry trends.
Wrote technical papers and proposals for evaluating new technologies and materials for enhancing existing product portfolio and data center infrastructure leading into new product development and introduction.
As a hands-on technical leader, I spearhead standardization workshops covering all aspects of cooling infrastructure. These workshops provided a platform for sharing knowledge and collaborating with other engineering managers and senior engineers; aimed to craft a global design strategy that was cost effective, reduced supply chain risks, SKUs, and simplified operation and maintenance of DC infrastructure.
Actively participated in senior leadership conferences; mentoring, conducting promotion assessments, and participating in performance discussions to ensure development and success of team members.
Special Projects:Led the next generation data center design plan of record (POR) development for AI/ML workloads with cross functional leaders resulting in a scalable, efficient and low cost design (6% versus POR saving $XB), enabling future flexibility analyzing industry available cooling technologies and proposals from partner teams.
Staff Data Center Mechanical Design Engineer
Meta Platforms, Inc.
02.2021 - 09.2022
Responsible for defining the research and development roadmap, equipment strategy, vision, and charter for the entire physical infrastructure with a goal to achieve specific outcomes within 1, 3, and 5-year timeframes.
Proposed and implemented a straightforward traditional cooling system with savings exceeding $100 million per DC with operational simplification when compared to the existing cooling system.
Identified and resolved key inefficiencies in perimeter cooling galleries saving over $20M per DC
Introduced a novel and simple method for cooling electrical rooms requiring minimal cooling equipment (DX or CW), leading to savings of over $5M+ with immediate buy-in from BMS, operations, and Cx teams.
Formulated and implemented equipment strategy for the entire data center portfolio. Successfully identified significant process gaps in the data center design execution process and addressed them with an innovative approach, gaining buy-in from cross-functional teams. Led to reduced design cycles and timelines.
Special Projects:Led next generation data center design that was low $/W and designed to be deployed with schedule efficiencies that are at par or better versus standard colocation markets and POR design.
Staff Data Center Mechanical Engineer
Google, Inc.
05.2011 - 02.2021
As a technical leader leading a team responsible for end-to-end design, I played a significant role in an accelerated program that delivered multiple data centers worldwide.
Researched and developed innovative solutions for data center infrastructure. These solutions focused on improving existing DC design, supporting futuristic DC designs, streamlining processes, and managing costs effectively.
Created and managed a team of global experts including site engineers, operations team, and controls engineers devising a vision and charter for all HVAC systems for DCs globally thus delivering new designs, vetting existing problems, sustaining operations, publishing monthly newsletters and quarterly program updates.
In the realm of Systems Design and Engineering, I led critical functions, including the design of central plant rooms at both the local and campus levels, electrical rooms and associated HVAC systems, generator rooms HVAC, fuel oil systems, fire protection systems (including Vesda, fire alarm, preaction systems, etc.) and control systems (spanning from BMS level to interconnected building level controls).
Conducted comprehensive engineering analyses to identify potential areas of risks in design and operations. These analyses encompassed aspects such as cooling system performance with bin analysis for energy and water use, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), reliability, flow modeling, site and building noise studies and impacts, and building external and internal Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assessments.
Led various schematic and detailed designs, conducting thorough reviews at the 30%, 65%, and 100% completion stages, collaborating closely with onsite teams, vendors and consulting firms. Oversaw the day-to-day tasks of general contractors, architects and engineers. This involved tasks such as preparing Statement of Work (SOW) and Request for Proposal (RFP) documents, as well as reviewing and approving SOWs and RFPs.
Special Projects:
Led the cooling infrastructure design for an innovative retrofit program that increased deployable capacity at several legacy data centers resulting in $100M+ cost savings across the fleet
Led several liquid cooling to racks solutions and finalized an efficient Day 1 vs Day N solution with proof-of-concept study and execution
Led a major modular data hall program and won accolades for execution efficiency (labor hours reduced by 30% and install time by 2 months)
