I served as a Ranger for the Department of Conservation from 04/30/23. My contract recently concluded on 08/12/23, and I remain an active employee of the department, scheduled to resume shifts starting 04/30/24. In my role as a ranger, I underwent spring training that focused on identifying safety hazards, including snags (a term used for dead trees or tree branches). I received training in analyzing people's hand movements, gestures, and emotions, and assessing the overall situation to effectively de-escalate conflicts.
My primary responsibilities were related to rule and law enforcement at Sebago State Park, where I was equipped with attire, a vehicle, and the necessary tools for patrolling. Working primarily independently, I encountered various day-to-day challenges such as addressing issues like public intoxication, trespassing, littering, parking/traffic violations, and more serious incidents like DUIs, verbal assaults, disputes, aggravated assaults, and damage to park property.
During the peak of summer, Sebago State Park would receive a significant daily influx of visitors, reaching up to 4-5 thousand cars. While stationed at the day area, I shared shifts with another ranger and we strategically divided tasks to ensure comprehensive coverage. Collaborative efforts with law enforcement, including Game Warden Sean Higgins, were not uncommon. My shifts typically spanned from 01:30 PM to 09:30 PM or 10:00 PM. I also assisted the second shift at the campground, which extended from 04:00 PM to midnight.
Beyond rule enforcement, I engaged in janitorial and landscaping work, encompassing tasks such as brush and tree removal, trash collection, trench digging, equipment replacement, and general maintenance like mowing lawns and weed whacking. While not officially certified, I received some training in first aid and administered it when necessary. Whenever I provided first aid, I was accompanied by a certified colleague. My time as a ranger was fulfilling, offering valuable learning experiences. I'm now eager to extend my career in serving the community as a law enforcement officer.
