Undergraduate Stem Cell Research Assistant

Endicott College
08.2022 - 05.2023

As a part of my research position, I evaluated the effects of mechanical stimuli on cell behavior in engineered tissues. I used C2C12 cells (myoblasts) and human mesenchymal stem cells to look at how mechanical stimuli impact muscle tissue function. Individual tasks included:

  • Basic cell culture (feeding, passing, counting, microscopic evaluation)
  • Creation of GelMA hydrogels (weighing, calculating, UV exposure)
  • Mechanical evaluation of hydrogels (compression testing w/Instron)
  • Analysis of mechanical testing (using Matlab routine to analyze stress-strain data)
  • Creation/culturing of cell-laden hydrogels
  • Microscopic evaluation of cell-laden hydrogels to assess tissue formation/function
  • Fabrication of GelMA precursor from gelatin (reacting gelatin with methacrylic anhydride to incorporate methacrylate groups onto gelatin, also involves dialysis and lyophilization.

Orientation Leader

Endicott College
01.2022 - 05.2024

The Orientation Leader (OL) program is a nine-month student leadership opportunity; the commitment consists of consecutive spring and fall semesters, including the summer and fall orientation sessions. Things completed:

  • Enhanced student orientation experience by organizing interactive activities and icebreakers.
  • Ensured student success by providing resources, guidance, and support throughout the orientation process.
  • Developed strong connections with students through active listening and empathetic communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills by fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among new students.

Volunteer Rock Climbing Instructor and Educator

Waypoint Adventure
05.2022 - Current

An outdoor adventure company focused on bringing adventure to those with disabilities. There I volunteer as a rock climbing instructor teaching participants skills such as outdoor climbing safety, belaying, knot tying, anchor building, rappelling, rock climbing rescue maneuvers, rock climbing history, geology of rock faces, as well as rock climbing techniques. In addition, I also teach mountaineering skills such as search and rescue skills, wilderness first aid, land navigation, survival skills, as well as lead groups of participants on hikes. My acomplishments:

  • Improved safety standards by conducting thorough equipment inspections before each climbing session.
  • Contributed to the growth of the rock climbing program by actively seeking feedback from clients to continually refine instructional methods and practices.
  • Collaborated with colleagues on creating new instructional courses for advanced climbers looking to expand their skillsets further.
  • Evaluated clients' progress regularly and adjusted instructional strategies accordingly to help them achieve their personal climbing goals effectively.

NASA Space Grant Intern

National Aeronautics And Space Administration
05.2022 - 08.2022
  • Supported staff members in their daily tasks, reducing workload burden and allowing for increased focus on higher-priority assignments.
  • Gained valuable experience working within a specific industry, applying learned concepts directly into relevant work situations.
  • Sorted and organized files, spreadsheets, and reports.
  • Gained hands-on experience in various software programs, increasing proficiency and expanding technical skill set.
