Experienced Yard Switcher Operator with a strong background in trailer maneuvering, route planning, and safety awareness. Skilled in inspections, equipment tracking, and keeping yard operations organized and compliant.
Perform pre-inspection of switcher truck to ensure safe and reliable operation prior to work shift. Inspection, examination and testing of all safety features to include braking system, air compressor and pressure testing, internal and external lighting fixtures, oil levels and pressure, coolant level, draining of air tanks and blow-off, fluid leaks, hydraulic fluid level and leaks, external components free from damage, doors and lock function, air lines, electrical cords and connections, tire inflation and tread wear, wheel and rim damage, fifth wheel plate and function, coupling devices and air supply, seat and seat belt, fire extinguisher, gauges and functions, mirrors, wipers and fluid, horn, back-up signal and lights, hydraulic controls and functions, steering, computer system, and communications system. Complete written report detailing the items as either passing or failing the inspection. Complete necessary reports for corrective action and or repair for deficiencies identified. Responsible for determining if the switcher truck may remain in service or be removed from service until such time all deficiencies are corrected. Perform trailer placement throughout the trailer staging yard and to and from the warehouse. Perform an inspection of each trailer prior to its movement to include air and electrical connection points, all lighting and markers, landing gear function, tire pressure and tread wear, required mud/tire protection flaps, license plate, structural soundness and readiness of the trailer as a whole. Report any deficiencies identified in a written report and place the trailer out of service for repairs. Visually monitor the conditions of the yard and immediately report any safety concerns or hazards to manager for corrective action. Report all unsafe actions of contracted drivers in the yard to include speeding, adverse driving, and any damage they may cause to company equipment.
• Mail Loading & Unloading: Unload and load mail from trucks and conveyors.
• Sorting & Separating: Separate mail received from trucks and conveyors, face letter mail, and deliver mail to distribution areas.
• Sack & Equipment Handling: Place empty sacks or pouches on racks, label them, dump mail from sacks, cut ties, and inspect or restring empty equipment.
• Processing Support: Carry mail to distributors, place processed mail into sacks, and separate outgoing bulk mails for dispatch.
• Simple Distribution: Perform occasional simple distribution of parcel post mail that requires no specialized scheme knowledge.
• Maintenance & Upkeep: Clean and sweep work areas, offices, restrooms, and truck bays when regular cleaners are not assigned, and rewrap damaged parcels.
• Visitor Services & Information: Act as a main point of contact for guests by answering questions about park rules, hiking trails, local wildlife, and camping facilities.
• Patrol & Rule Enforcement: Patrol park grounds by foot, vehicle, or bicycle to monitor visitor activities, promote safe practices, and enforce state park rules (seasonal rangers typically do not require full peace officer certification).
• Emergency Response: Assist during emergencies, provide basic first aid, help coordinate search and rescue efforts, and connect with local law enforcement or EMS when necessary.
• Interpretive & Educational Programs: Lead guided nature hikes, outdoor tours, and historical or environmental presentations.
• Resource Protection: Support stewardship tasks such as wildlife observation and invasive species management.
• Facility Maintenance & Operations: Perform light maintenance work, including picking up litter, checking restrooms, inspecting trails, and monitoring basic equipment.
• Record Keeping: Log daily activities, visitor interactions, and incident reports.
