Work History

Biological Field Techinician

Bureau of Reclamation
05.2024 - 08.2024
  • As a bird surveyor for the Bureau of Reclamation, I took on partial crew lead responsibilities, overseeing team operations and ensuring smooth execution of our surveys. My role consistently involved long hours, often starting at 4:00 a.m. and extending beyond 12-hour shifts, requiring considerable overtime.
  • Depending on the day, I led or participated in kayaking upriver to access remote survey sites, or walking through entire sites on foot, conducting nest monitoring and protecting endangered species like the yellow-billed cuckoo and the Southwestern willow flycatcher.
  • Navigating through dense, rugged terrain filled with thick vegetation and exposed to hazardous conditions—venomous snakes, mountain lions, bears, and poisonous insects—was a regular challenge, often in extreme heat surpassing 100°F. At times, I had to crawl on my hands and knees for hours while conducting delicate bird monitoring, all while ensuring the protection of the nests from parasitic birds.
  • In addition to my field duties, I contributed to administrative tasks including scheduling, coordinating vehicle swaps, and data management. I was trained in tire changing and vehicle maintenance, ensuring that our field vehicles were fully operational for each survey. My work also involved inputting data into ArcGIS, digitizing field forms, and preparing reports to ensure compliance with survey protocols.
  • I hold certifications in bird banding, and I'm specifically certified in the protection of endangered birds, including the Yellow-billed cuckoo and Southwestern willow flycatcher.

Intern

06.2023 - 07.2023
  • Since July 5th - August 5th I have worked fulltime as a paid intern for the Federal Government in the Environmental Division section of the USIBWC. As an intern my job was to survey monitoring wells and transfer the findings into a database for the summer record of 2023. In addition to working in conjunction with the Bureau of Reclamation to survey threatened and endangered species of birds in the Rio Grande river.
  • I was also tasked with writing a 100+ page report of habitat and monitoring well statuses that will be published in spring of 2024. As well as presenting my data that I had collected in a scientific poster for the President and colleagues of the USIBWC and for the UTEP Symposium.
