Work History

Health Educator/Licensed Practical Nurse

Worth County Public Health
03.2000 - Current

As Health Educator for Worth County Public Health,

  • I developed and implemented health education strategies for school-aged children in Worth County, classes were taught during the school year at both schools in Worth County for students in grades Kindergarten-6th grade using many different evidenced based curriculums that I have researched throughout the years to keep the most up to date information available to the students. in 2001-2010 education was also being done with grades 7th-12th grade, but we were able to see there was more impact on the lower grades and so we made the decision to use funding for those age groups.
  • I developed and distributed health education materials to increase awareness and understanding of health issues affecting citizens of all ages in Worth County. These materials were shared at parenting fairs, the Worth County Fair, school conferences, and all the local community celebrations that are held usually during the summer. We have also shared information at all the libraries in every town in county. In the last couple of years we have started utilizing Facebook as well to be able to reach a large audience. I am one of two people responsible for the content shared on the Worth County Public Health Facebook page.
  • Raised awareness of public health issues through organizing workshops and presentations at local women's clubs, Lion's club, and church groups.
  • Maintained accurate and complete records to document program activities and outcomes.
  • Developed and implemented health education programs to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic diseases to all ages in Worth County per the Community Health Needs Assessment.
  • Assessed success of health education programs through surveys and data collection and used the information for the following years programming.

As a visiting nurse and Primary Vaccine Coordinator,

  • I have improved patient outcomes by administering medications, monitoring vital signs, changing and caring for wounds and documenting relevant information all while following the standards of practices of the Iowa Board of Nursing and Department of Inspection and Appeals (IDIAL).
  • Contributed to overall public health goals by administering vaccines according to established guidelines and recommendations.
  • I am responsible for all the ordering, storage and handling of the vaccines we carry at WCPH.
  • I am also responsible for training and continuing education of all staff on vaccine administration and storage and handling as well as proper use of temperature monitoring systems and daily documentation of all vaccines at WCPH. I report to the state bi-monthly all vaccine information as required to hold the Immunization Grant at WCPH.
  • I do all the state required audits at both schools in the county as well as the all the daycare centers and preschools, when audits are complete, I report all information to the state in October of every year.
  • Education of the public of recommended vaccines.
  • CPR instructor, I have been instructor since 2003. I do education for all county staff as well as private entities that request CPR training. I have to go through Instructor training every 3 years.

As the Lead Epidemiology person at WCPH,

  • I am responsible for enhancing public health safety by investigating and analyzing epidemiological data for disease outbreaks and reporting to the state on the state IDSS system following strict timelines for the investigations and reporting. This year alone we have had 40 cases that required investigation and reporting to the state. During COVID I was investigating and reporting cases 7 days a week.

As a grant writer for Worth County Public Health,

  • Developed impactful grant applications to enhance organization's potential for funding awards. I research and apply for government and private grant opportunities. Since writing for my first grant in 2004, I have written and received grants up to $90,000 per year, mostly the grants have been to pay for my salary time for substance abuse, education tobacco education, and time in the classrooms with students in Worth County. I have also written grants for new county vehicles, new exam tables for our exam room, new vaccine refrigerators, as well as all the items that were given to students for the last 5 years in their "personal care bags". This last fiscal year alone I wrote and received $45,000 in grants, as well as other grants I collaborated with other WCPH staff to write and receive the funding.
  • Tracked in-process and previously submitted grant applications to obtain status updates. Submit all progress reports for all state and local grants to make sure all grants were following specific guidelines as to not be in default from the state.
  • Developed persuasive case statements using data-driven evidence to demonstrate impact and need for support from funders.

Other trainings that are required for Iowa LPH that I have

  • National Incident Management System(NIMS), Public Information Officer, Liaison Officer, Safety Officer, and backup Incident Commander.
