Welding and assembling structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, buildings. This includes selecting materials and equipment, planning layouts and welding using knowledge of geometry and welding techniques, and positioning and fitting components in various positions. Structural welders use arc and arc gas welding equipment to join metal components and may be required to weld in different positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead. They connect and adjust welding equipment settings according to procedures and guide the electrode or welding gun to achieve the desired weld.
Additional responsibilities include handling materials, performing minor tool and equipment maintenance, and assisting other mechanics. Structural welders must also observe and comply with all safety and project rules and may need to use respiratory protection. Other duties can involve cleaning weld joints, repairing parts, removing excess weld material, preheating work pieces, cutting metal, and examining welds for specifications.
Responsible for laying out, fitting, and welding components to create structural forms for industrial projects. This includes working with various materials like pipe, sheet metal, and structural steel using different welding processes such as arc, heliarc, gas, MIG, and TIG. They also perform repairs by dismantling and reassembling parts, and may use cutting torches. Safety is paramount, requiring adherence to JSAs, use of safety equipment, and maintaining a clean work area. Following instructions and blueprints, maintaining equipment, and problem-solving welding defects are also key tasks.
