Dissertation - "The Anorectic Poverty of Self: Teenage Women and Eating Disorders"
At the defense of my dissertation, some years ago, one of the people in the
audience said, “I will be right there when she writes her book. ”I did know I always
wanted to write a book. I just never realized it would be in the form that it has
become.
Teaching has been a part of me for more than 50 years, so I guess it was natural
that this would be the format it took.
Victor in Chapter 1 has always been my true inspiration. I figured that if he could
put words together to make a sentence, then almost anyone could achieve some
form of learning. I do remember so clearly that day in the classroom as we all
celebrated his accomplishment.
The layout of each chapter is similar. The first section covers the classroom
setting; the second part is a pedagogical theory that is connected to that student
in my eyes; the third part is a piece of literature that is reminiscent of that young
person.
I never would have dreamed many years ago that my journey would take me
through so many places and with so many people. All the students, about whom I
have written in this book, are actual people. I have changed their names for
privacy. I may not remember all the facts as clearly as I do in Chapter 1, so I have
inserted what I believe happened. Some events may be turned around a bit,
places may be changed, times may be misconstrued, but the intent is sincere.
Forgive me for any errors, for anything that is wrong is my fault, and can be
attributed to no one else.
I sincerely hope that ‘all my children’ have benefitted from my teaching as much
as I have benefitted from their presence.
