Certified Nursing Assistant

Des Moines, IA

  • Ensuring & providing proper care of residents, Bathing & dressing residents, assisting with activities of daily living, assist with taking vitals, communicate the conditions of the residents to the nurses, answer call lights for the residents to provide assistance, ensure the residents' living areas and rooms are properly cleaned and organized. When hired, I did start on the medical/surgical unit. I had to manage 26 patients and excelled in providing the best care possible. I learned to place catheters and how to properly care for them, especially if long term. I learned how to place ostomy appliances properly and to ensure proper care of the ostomies. I learned how place a patient for a mobile x-ray. I also had to follow the precautions for multiple standard precautions for specific patient rooms and how to don the proper PPE. I also did blood sugars and reported them to the nurses for further evaluation. I also learned to properly clean a patient before their surgery and the steps to ensure that it is done perfectly. I currently work on a Psych/Dementia unit where patients transition to long-term care facilities from this unit. I learned how to properly approach a Code Green (disruptive, violent behavior), or what would turn into a code, and how to redirect properly without creating further disruption. I have most recently transferred to another unit that is a mixture of long-term care, short-term care and complete hospice care. I have learned dressings and treatments under the supervision of the nurse, how to entirely position a hospice patient for optimal comfort and how to ensure the family understands what is happening with their family member. I have increased my communication skills immensely being on the hospice hall and in making connections with the families.
