I was part of a team tasked with surveying a turtle population in a residential lake in Fort Worth, Texas. Texas Parks and Wildlife had recruited our class to investigate whether this population of turtles was being affected by a newly discovered virus. To conduct our study, we set up four hoop traps with canned sardines and retrieved them after 24 hours. We then tagged and scanned each turtle, recorded their total circumference and weight, and released them back into the lake. Using the data we acquired, plus the data from the previous year, we conducted a population density survey using the POPAN formulation in the program MARK. We then wrote a report detailing our findings, which highlighted the potential impact of the virus on the turtle population. Throughout the project, there was exceptional attention to detail and adherence to IACUC procedures, ensuring that all aspects of the study were conducted ethically and with high standards. Overall, this experience enhanced my critical thinking skills while allowing me to contribute to meaningful research.
