a. AP Seminar
AP Seminar is an interdisciplinary, college-level course focused on critical thinking, academic research, and evidence-based writing and presentation. The AP Exam focused on synthesizing diverse sources from cold reads, and then analyzing the author’s main intent in the passages. The exam also included a collaborative research project, where the student writes an individual research report on a specific perspective on a team topic. Then, the group creates and submits a presentation which synthesizes their research findings from each perspective. The last part of the exam consists of an individual research argument, where the student is handed a stimulus packet to spark ideas, and has to write a 2000 word essay presenting the student’s argument based off of the stimuli. Finally, an Individual Multimedia Presentation is conducted by the student over their chosen argument, and is then followed by two oral defense questions presented by the teacher, which interrogate the student’s process and research.
b. AP Research
AP Research, a college-level course focused on conducting original, yearlong investigations.
A design and execution of a study examining the psychological advantages and disadvantages of interpersonal relationships between high school and collegiate student-athlete swimmers and their coaches, parents, and teammates in Texas and Arkansas was conducted. The qualitative data was collected and analyzed to explore how these relationships impact performance, motivation, and mental health in competitive swimming. The research also served as a prompt to allow an audience of coaches, parents, teammates, and sports medicine doctors to be more aware of and reverse the poisonous effects of negative environments on the achievement of a student athlete in the realm of competitive swimming. This study was also created with the goal of sparking the innovation and implementation of the spread and accessibility of more positive, therapeutic options for rising and current collegiate athletes struggling with their mental health.
