I appreciate the importance of research and scientific communication as related to human health and in general. It is more difficult to get grants for animal research that is not primarily concerned with human health and well-being. Working with birds and animal behavior was a woderful opportunity.
As a cellular molecular neuroscience major, I wanted to become more familiar with cognitive behavioral work while exploring the underlying molecular mechanisms.
I learned and used various genetic techniques and participated in the teamwork required for good research. I balanced my participation in lab and rigorous schoolwork. While working with my mentor, I was able to learn about the logistics behind fieldwork and international scientific communication. It was exciting to see how labs in different universities interact, sharing protocol tips and lending a pair of fresh eyes to look at kinks in the process and stumps in results.
