I am a seasoned nursing professional with proven clinical knowledge, interpersonal strengths and technical abilities. I'm a team-oriented individual with the ability to lead nursing teams and coordinate care for all neonates and their families, and am excited to teach and share knowledge with new nurses and students alike. Recently, I have been helping to educate new transport nurses to the team and have both envisioned and prepared a simulation for these new staff to transport, with manager approval, and received positive feedback. I love teaching and am cognizant that every student learns in their own way. It would be exciting to be given the opportunity to share the enthusiasm for teaching with the next generation of nurses. I believe in mentoring and the power of sharing and igniting passion in student nurses so they can provide safe and quality care, so I have been actively working on teaching strategies to engage all participants. When teaching, I ask participants to give constructive and truthful feedback, which I always review, to help me become the best educator I can be. In this way, I am constantly seeking to improve my teaching styles to help engage every participant.
I am currently in charge of Nursing Residency RN's during their 16 weeks of orientation. Responsible for completing their schedules for training, hosted educator days and worked with them in simulation lab. Assisted them in completing education via LMS as needed. Completed their evaluations, and have assisted them in becoming independent RNs in the NICU unit. I have also been helping with staff nurse education as it has arisen.
Hired to teach RN preparation classes, I have not completed one to date. Training has been completed and then the pandemic happened. Classes stopped being in person, hopeful to teach a class soon.
This was a per diem position, doing contact tracing for Public Health Department. Contacting individuals informing them of their positive SARS CoV 2 positive results. I am an experienced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse with the ability to offer proven clinical knowledge, interpersonal strengths and technical abilities. My experience includes caring for the smallest infants in the Small Baby Unit, and caring for any infant in the NICU. I also have been cooling trained and am able to care for infants with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE). As a member of the transport team, I transport infants from surrounding area hospitals who require a higher level of care. I am active in educating new staff and community nurses, respiratory therapists and physicians by teaching The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program in conjunction with Loma Linda Staff Development. For many years, I have been teaching Monitoring the Neonate for the NICU Basic Class, both with Staff Development and the NICU Educators. I have been active on the Clinical Practice Committee for the last three years, while Loma Linda Children's Hospital obtained Magnet Status. I participate regularly in the Simulation lab for fellows, residents, new staff and referring medical professionals. I love working with students and new employees and, when able, I am always open to precepting.
I have been on the transport team since 1993 and transitioned to manager in 1996. As a manager, one is the team leader and is responsible for providing needed care to stabilize some of the sickest infants who require a higher level of care requiring transport from referring hospitals to Loma Linda NICU. Transport consists of communicating with the LL physician and providing an accurate description of infant appearance coupled with vital signs, lab and x-ray review. Depending on the condition of the infant, my skills include the ability to intubate and place umbilical lines and/or chest tubes to stabilize infants for transport by either ambulance, helicopter or fixed wing.
While in this position, I contributed to the NICU website in conjunction with the IT department. I was responsible for Staff Nurse Competency Days, NICU Basic Class and Advance Classes and I worked with the Nursing Residency Program in preparing the nursing residents to acclimate to the NICU bedside. I also worked with the Labor and delivery educator to run required code pink drills.
I maintained RN's evaluations, and was responsible to maintain that staff nurses' licenses and certifications were current and kept employee files for CMS certifications, advocated for nurses in obtaining credentials, advancing in clinical ladder advancement and prepared nursing schedules. Together with other charge nurses and both the Assistant and Nurse Manager I handled parent concerns and unit cohesiveness. I collaborated and kept the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager up to date to keep them aware of actual and potential nurse disciplinary problems.
I lectured at Career Fairs for nursing at three high schools within our community, with the last one in April 2018. These presentations were approximately 40 minutes each and held in three different periods, with each presentation describing our skills as NICU transport nurses, sharing the way to become a nurse, and our passion for nursing, for tomorrows medical professionals.
