My volunteer duties included shelving library materials, pulling holds for patrons and general customer service.

• I oversaw all editorial operations of View Newspapers, the community publications of the Las Vegas Review-Journal
• I edited every story and proofread every page in 11 weekly zoned editions, paying special attention to grammar, punctuation and proper word usage
• I coordinated a style guide for the Review-Journal after being promoted to deputy editor of the newspaper
• I hired and trained copy editors and reporters, with an emphasis on producing error-free copy.

• I oversaw all editorial operations of this daily newspaper owned by the McClatchy Company, including the hiring of copy editors, reporters, photographers and page designers
• I continued to write The Final Edit, a monthly editing/writing newsletter that served as an effective teaching tool for the staff.

• Hired as a copy editor, I was promoted to assistant sports editor in 1989 and to sports editor in 1990
• I was promoted again in 1999 to be the newspaper's first chief of copy desks, overseeing approximately 60 copy editors on the news, features and sports copy desks
• I added the duties of internship director in 2001
• In addition to hiring for all department positions as sports editor, I oversaw an annual budget of approximately $1 million and met my budget requirements every year
• In 1999, as chief of copy desks, I began writing The Final Edit, a monthly editing/writing newsletter that served as a teaching tool for a 300-person newsroom
• I left The Bee in 2004 when I was offered and accepted a position to become executive editor, the top newsroom position, of The Beaufort Gazette, a daily newspaper in South Carolina and part of the same company as The Bee.

• I worked on the sports copy desk for a newspaper ranked annually as having one of the nation's top 10 sports sections, editing local and national stories and writing headlines
• I left this position for a comparable position at The Sacramento Bee, in a city that better fit my family's lifestyle.

• As a reporter, I covered college basketball, professional basketball, major league baseball and horse racing
• As a copy editor, I edited local and national stories and wrote headlines
