  • I was promoted again in 1999 to be the newspaper's first chief of copy desks, overseeing approximately 60 copy editors on the news, features and sports copy desks
  • I added the duties of internship director in 2001
  • In addition to hiring for all department positions as sports editor, I oversaw an annual budget of approximately $1 million and met my budget requirements every year
  • In 1999, as chief of copy desks, I began writing The Final Edit, a monthly editing/writing newsletter that served as a teaching tool for a 300-person newsroom
  • I left The Bee in 2004 when I was offered and accepted a position to become executive editor, the top newsroom position, of The Beaufort Gazette, a daily newspaper in South Carolina and part of the same company as The Bee.
