The Correctional Shift Supervisor position serves as a supervisor in IDOC facilities and is a vital position for the custody, control, and safety of all IDOC facilities. Correctional Majors manage issues and concerns of staff and individuals in custody to facilitate effective operations.

Essential Functions

• Plans, coordinates and directs a security force in housing and custodial services on an assigned shift.
• Serves as full-line supervisor.
• Coordinates security for vocational, education/treatment, activity-based programs.
• Receives, reviews and approves Roster Master sheets for shift assignments.
• Participates in clinical, professional, administrative meetings.
• Prepares and submits various reports, Wardens monthly activity reports, performance evaluations, unusual incidents, discipline referrals and revised procedures.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Under general supervision, instructs and supervises Correctional Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and Correctional Officer Trainees; enforces and maintains discipline, safety, security, maintenance, sanitary and custodial measures for the control of inmates; monitors compliance with Departmental Rules, Administrative Directives and Institutional Policies.

• Supervised daily operations within correctional facility, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
• Managed staff schedules and assignments to optimize workflow efficiency and coverage.
• Conducted regular inspections of facilities to identify security breaches and maintenance needs.
• Trained new personnel on operational procedures, safety regulations, and emergency response protocols.
• Implemented conflict resolution strategies to de-escalate tense situations among inmates and staff.
• Developed and enforced behavioral policies to maintain order and promote rehabilitation among inmates.

• Security and Control: Officers conduct, patrol, and maintain security in cell houses, work areas, and yards, preventing escapes and disturbances.
• Inmate Supervision: They manage daily movement, including meals, recreation, and work assignments, while conducting regular counts of inmates.
• Searches and Inspections: Officers perform searches for contraband, such as drugs or weapons, on visitors, inmates, and within cells or work locations.
• Transportation and Escort: Responsible for securely transporting individuals in custody to courts, hospitals, or other correctional institutions.
• Reporting and Compliance: They document inmate behavior, enforce rules and safety regulations, and submit written reports on incidents.
• Emergency Response: Officers respond to and manage incidents of violence or medical crises within the facility.
