SYEDA BUSHRA AHESAM

Highly motivated to pursue a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology a domain known for its strong focus on innovative clinical research and commitment to patient-centered care. During my Internal Medicine residency, I developed a particular interest in heme-onc malignancies, and I have honed my clinical skills through my electives and 18 month rotations. My dedication to research and patient care is exemplified by my participation in NCI study and engaging in community engagement and continuity clinics. I am also passionate about improving community health outcomes, demonstrated by leading a QI in cervical cancer screening and promoting colon cancer screening awareness. I believe my skills and experience align perfectly with the demands of this field and I am eager to contribute to the ongoing research efforts while providing compassionate care to patients in a community setting.

Acquired extensive knowledge in internal medicine through a comprehensive 3-year residency program, becoming proficient in managing a broad spectrum of adult medical conditions. Managed diverse medical conditions across inpatient (ICU, ER) and outpatient settings, demonstrating strong clinical versatility.Rotations in subspecialties broadened my knowledge base, while experience at a primary stroke center honed my diagnostic and management skills for this critical condition.Extensive outpatient exposure cultivated my ability to build rapport and deliver patient-centered care, aligning perfectly with my goal of practicing medical oncology in a community setting.

• Extensive Training: Completed IM residency and participated in 18 months of longitudinal oncology electives with diverse oncologists at CMC, demonstrating a strong foundation in the field.
• Research Experience: Actively involved in NCI research, contributing to advancements in innovative cancer treatments.
• Clinical Competence: Regularly participated in tumor board meetings, clinical rotations in different sub specialties of medicine, and presented research on key topics (DVT screening, solitary pulmonary nodules, transfusion thresholds).
• Commitment to Learning: Maintain subscriptions to leading oncology journals (ASH, ASCO, JNCC) for continuous knowledge acquisition.

Research Experience

• Trastuzumab in HER2+ Breast Cancer (St. Johns Hospital & Research Institute, 2014-2017): I participated in a retrospective study evaluating the effectiveness of Trastuzumab in women with HER2+ breast cancer. My role involved collecting and analyzing patient data.
• Co-Authored Publications (2024): I co-authored two abstracts submitted to CHEST 2024: "A RARE PRESENTATION OF MULTIPLE MYELOMA WITH SHORTNESS OF BREATH, ATYPICAL POLYARTHRITIS AND RASH: A DIAGNOSTIC CHALLENGE" (Abstract ID: 1545026) and "EXAMINING RESPIRATORY CHALLENGES IN HEMOPHAGOCYTIC LYMPHOHISTIOCYTOSIS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF REPORTED CASES" (Abstract ID: 1513640).

Additional Activities

• QI Project Lead (Residency Clinic): I led a quality improvement project aiming to increase cervical cancer screening rates in our residency clinic by 5%.
• Cancer Screening Project (Ithaca Community): I participated in a project focused on improving cancer screening rates within the Ithaca community.

• Cancer Awareness and Screening: Presented on colorectal cancer screening at community events (Southside Community Center - March 2023, Calvary Baptist Church - February 2024).
