Work History
Camp Counselor
SMArt Summer
Wilmington, DE
06.2023 - 08.2024
As a paid counselor for the SMArt summer camp (hosted by Cab Calloway School of the Arts), I worked for 6 weeks each summer from 7am-5:30pm. My primary role was to take care of the kids (ages 1st-8th grade), supervise their behavior, and to help the teachers/admin with tasks. I also worked in the theater tech department regularly to make sure the camps and weekly showcases ran smoothly.
I frequently worked with individual kids who had more behavior issues or arguments to help them pay attention and problem solve appropriately.
This job taught me a lot about responsibility and attention to detail because if any small thing went wrong with equipment or systems, it meant kids could be hurt or lost.
Working with kids for extended periods of time also taught me a lot about empathy, since I had to put myself in the kids' shoes to understand what was making them upset and how I could fix it or help them.
Theater Technician
Cab Calloway School of the Arts
Wilmington , DE
09.2022 - 08.2024
Accumulated around 750 hours of volunteer work over the 2 school years I worked as a theater technician.
Learned how to set up and operate many different pieces of theater equipment, such as fly systems, microphones, saws, hazers, and basic lighting components.
Built multiple large sets for school plays and musicals.
Helped set up and run school district board meetings.
Helped set up and run school plays, musicals, dances, and external events hosted by our theater.
This job taught me a lot about leadership and working with other people because, in order to accomplish all the necessary tasks during a production, there needed to be strong communication and participation from all members involved.
This job taught me a lot about precision and preparation because, in order to run a multi-hour show with mic changes, curtain movements, set pieces, etc., I had to know what was coming next at all times and know exactly how to deal with it, in order to keep the show seamless from an audience perspective.
Precision and attention to detail also came into play a large amount during the construction phases of the shows. Some sets I constructed were large enough to cover the whole stage, while other times, I was adding fine details to a desk to make it look older. Regardless of the size of the set, I had to carefully select the materials I was going to use, draw a blueprint of my ideas, and then calculate measurements. Only after I was confident in the precision of my plans, would I be able to start building in order to avoid wasted time and materials.
