Dear Abi Hodges,

I understand AIM Independent Living Center is focused on empowering disabled veterans to live more independently and be provided with the most excellent service and care, and with my experience of having strong communication and practical care skills, I’m confident that I would be a great fit for the Veteran Directed Care job position.

While pursuing my Associates Degree in Humanities and Social Sciences at Corning Community College, I learned and established strong foundational skills in communication and critical thinking. Taking a variety of college courses such as Sociology and Helping Skills and Prepractice (Human Resources) has helped me immensely at being a better active listener and problem solver. Joining extracurricular activities on campus, like “Pride Club”, was a great way to get involved with fellow students and to set myself up for a leadership position. I was the event's coordinator for “Pride Club” and I helped plan a Halloween dance that had roughly 50–60 attendees. I was responsible for ordering enough food, drinks and desserts for the event. The budget for buying everything was 300 dollars and the club agreed to have meat/dairy-free options available. After searching for different catering and dessert options, I found locations that fell within the club's price range and the dance had enough food for everyone who attended. Being the events' coordinator for my club's Halloween dance allowed me to gain experience in problem-solving, collaborative teamwork and taking risks, which was very helpful for my overall success.

My ability to collaborate with others, be a problem solver and to take on a leadership role has strengthened my communication skills, flexibility and interpersonal skills. These are qualities that I’m confident will translate well into this Veteran Directed Care role. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and I would love a chance to bring my skills and knowledge to AIM Independent Living Center and to provide the most excellent care and emotional support to veterans in need.
