Impactful Classes

  • AASP398C/ ENGL317 Selected Topics in the African Diaspora; African American Literature (Spring, 2024): This course focused on Black Literature that primarily focuses on the intersection of blackness and humanity. Often in Black History, non-white individuals were treated as something other than human. This course dives into the literature of the Harlem Renaissance and the surrounding periods and has expanded my knowledge of the history of America greatly. This Class has not only taught me a ton, but I have increased my critical thinking skills in this class as well as my empathy towards others.

  • ENGL391 Advanced Composition (Spring, 2024): This class is a class that focuses on identifying rhetorical strategies in writing and promoting critical thinking as well. I find this class to be very beneficial to the fundamentals of my writing skills. Being able to identify rhetorical strategies can provide insight into the purpose of a work or the meaning of the argument of a piece. Much of my writing comes in the form of analysis, thus increasing my critical thinking skills in writing and my awareness of purpose has helped me to write more meaningful and powerful works.

  • Hist377/ ISRL330/ JWST334 Mizrahi Identity in Israel (Fall, 2023): This course is one that specifically analyzed the representation and treatment of Mizrahi Jews in the media and in real life, both historically and in the present. This class was especially informative for me as my knowledge of Jewish history is scarce. I enjoyed this class because it made me aware of the history of Jewish people whilst also helping me develop the ability to judge purpose from people's actions. For much of the class, we would dissect movies or papers surrounding the treatment of Mizrahi politically, and in doing this I gained a better understanding of public media and the purposes of portraying people or concepts in a specific way. This class has helped me digest media today; with an enhanced awareness for the purpose the media was produced.

  • Hist250/ LACS250 History of Colonial Latin America (Fall 2023): This is a class that primarily focuses on the idea of Hegemony within the contexts of the colonial conquests of Latin America. This class forced me to think of the concept of hierarchical structures within society, and how people manipulate others to benefit themselves. Ideas of purpose and greed within colonialism were echoed in this class, and the class helped me think critically about the motives of historical figures in Latin America and today's political sphere.

  • ENGL301 This is English (Spring 2023): This course is a general English course, covering literary and cultural subjects, discussing rhetoric and language primarily. This course was instrumental to my understanding of the English major, as it showed me that I enjoy writing in many styles. It taught me the basics of many differing styles of writing, and it proved to me that I could succeed in various writing styles. The class also focused on modern-day applications of interpretations of the works of the class. This was very informative as it connected English to what I see in my day-to-day life.
