The Child Support Services Division of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) can help you ask the court for a change in the amount of your child support order. You can ask for the order to be higher or lower. Asking for a change in the order is called a modification. You can ask for our help if all of the following are true:
We are providing full services to collect and enforce your child support order
You are the parent or caretaker who gets support or you are the parent who pays support
Your request is just about child or medical support and it doesn't involve parenting time or some other issue
What do I do first?
Consider how much child support the court might order. In Massachusetts, the court uses the Child Support Guidelines to determine the amount of a child support order. You can get an idea of how much the court might order by using the online Child Support Calculation Worksheet available on our website at mass.gov/css.
Remember, if you ask the court to modify your order, the court may make the order higher or lower or may make no change at all.
I want DOR's help, what do I do next?
Fill out the worksheet on the other side of this page and sign it
Attach any paperwork that will help explain why the amount of your order should change. Examples include copies of:
Military orders
Paystubs, bank statements, or income tax returns
Letter verifying you get public assistance benefits
Court order giving you custody of the child(ren)
Letters or documents verifying that you provide health insurance coverage for the child(ren)
Proof that you receive unemployment benefits
Proof that you receive Social Security or Veterans' benefits
Workers' Compensation award letters
Documents verifying that you have a disability or an injury
If you are incarcerated for more than 12 months, you must also complete and send to us an incarceration affidavit.
What if I feel unsafe? If you feel that you or your children would not be safe if you ask for a change in the amount of your order, call us before you send in any paperwork.
What will DOR do with my paperwork? Once we get the documents from you we will review them, and decide if we can help you:
If we can help you, we'll send you a letter to tell you about the next steps.
If we can't help you, we'll send you a letter telling you that. You can still ask the court for a change on your own, without DOR's help.
What do I do with the worksheet and other paperwork?

The other parent's income and ability to pay has gone up
There is a change in the health insurance coverage for the child(ren)

When we had court I sent my cost of living but when they said it was never received. I told them i sent it but it was never looked at. I believe the decision was based as i didnt have anything to pay. Also i mentioned that my last day of work was 8/28/26 due to relocation.
