BIAK AWARD for Helmet Give Aways in Kentuky

  • I had met Heather and her son TJ at BIAK in Frankfort Kentucky during Brain Injury month in March of 1917, her son TJ was riding his bike in 2010 with out a helmet went to stop flew over his handle bars into gravel went to Louisville Children's Hospital where they didn't think he was going to make it. He did make it will a Traumatic Brain Injury where he will never be independent, will need help, continuing will need surgery the rest of his life. In Kentucky it is not mandatory to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. So Heather, Mary Hass, Diane Gutierrez and myself came up with TJ's Law making it mandatory that anyone under the age of 12 wear a helmet. A large study found that 88% of young riders (17 and younger) who suffered head and neck injuries were not wearing helmets. Bicycle accidents are a leading cause of head injuries in children, with an estimated 26,000 children treated in emergency departments for head injuries from cycling each year. While not 100% effective, helmets are the single most effective device for preventing head injury and death in bicycle crashes helmets for preventing head and facial injuries in bicyclists. Encouraging helmet use with kids and adults. If your kids see you wearing a helmet they will also. We tried to get TJ's Bill through the Legislator (which we did every time) but we always ended up being shut out by the Senate, because the Motorcycle People of the State thought if we got that bill through we would go after them. We did give it a fight.

In the meantime Heather contacted Nutcase Helmets which have really good designs that kids would wear. We got people to donate money to purchase the helmets where we would go into the schools explain to the kids how to wear them and why. If the helmet doesn't look good the child will not wear it! I also went to different city fairs and gave them away. I felt like we made a difference in that way and we ended up touching many people. That is what my reward was about!
