As the Associate Nurse Manager to the OR Manager, I provide operational and administrative support throughout the day and evening. I oversee the daily operations of the surgical suite by collaborating with the Chief of Anesthesia, ASU and PACU mangers to facilitate room flow and maximize productivity, while ensuring the delivery of high quality, safe patient care. I participate in staff development activities, including performance improvement, teamwork and mentoring of Nurse Fellows and new employees. In addition, I balanced and facilitated the schedule by organizing vacations with the needs of the Surgical Services Department.
As a staff RN in the OR, I utilized my critical thinking skills and professional judgement in planning, implementing and evaluating treatment of the preoperative patient in the surgical suite. I would collaborate with the attending Anesthesiologist, Surgeons and other members of the health care team in providing high quality patient care, and ensuring continued safety to optimize outcomes. My responsibilities included managing Orthopedic joint replacements and all aspects of minimally invasive vascular surgery for stent grafting of abdominal aortic aneurysm and thoracic aortic aneurysm for revascularization. In addition, I circulated general, urologic, gyn, breast, platics and bronchoscopy.
As a circulating RN in the OR, I coordinated all aspects of the surgical team for the newly merged Health Alliance Hospitals which included, Kingston Hospital and Benedictine Hospital. My responsibilities included coordinating care of the surgical patient as well as the critical patient. As the Orthopedic coordinator, I managed, organized and educated staff pertaining to the care of Orthopedic patients. In conjunction, I worked in all other services Trauma, Vascular, Thoracic, Urology, Laparoscopic and General Surgery. On-Call was a requirement which necessitated covering both Hospitals overnight and weekends.
As the RN I managed the care of the surgical patient as they transitioned from Pre-op through the surgical suite to PACU. I coordinated patient's pre-surgical testing and their follow-up care. My responsibilities included, materials management of all supplies and implants. I assisted Anesthesia during induction and emergence. In addition, I managed the Central Sterile Processing Department.
As the lead registered nurse for a busy Cardiologist, I performed assessments of current and new patients, which included triage. I obtained new history and physicals, reviewed medications and monitored anti-coagulants. I performed 12 lead ECG's. I was responsible for patient's anticoagulation therapy and ordered their necessary laboratory testing. Triage of patients was either via telephone or walk-in basis. Executed appropriate steps for patient treatment following careful review and closed-loop communication with attending physician.
As a Graduate Nurse, I provided patient-centered care to the Cardiac patients on the Medical Surgical floor. I assessed, planned, implemented and evaluated patients and their care plans. I coordinated patient care with other disciplines, administered medications, started IV's, monitored cardiac telemetry, and documented accordingly. Administed oral, IV and intra-muscular medications and monitored patient reactions. Detail oriented Hand-off communication to ensure and optimize patient outcomes.
