I have worked in the GI Department and at times in the PACU since 2009. Primarily, I provide nursing care for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures or having surgery. Throughout my time in this position I have also participated in many Performance Improvement Projects including the creation of: workflows, training documents, record-keeping logs; as well as review and revision of department policies.
I work in the GI Department providing care for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures. This involves providing Pre-procedure, Intra-procedure, and Post-procedure nursing care. Review of patient referrals and the medical record are are key in the procedure scheduling phase. In some cases patients are struggling with mental health conditions, addiction and other disabilities which requires evaluation of the patient's ability to participate in preparation for the endoscopic procedures. The preparation process can be difficult to understand and follow, so educating patients and/or their caregivers in an effective manner is critical. Assessment of the patient's overall health is used to determine whether it is safe to perform the procedure with moderate sedation. In some cases the patient does require anesthesia which requires coordination with the Operating Room Scheduler. Collaboration with multiple departments makes it possible to give patients the best care possible.
